No DB normally 5 1.5 Drains would only do what you are stating But i have one of my 5 drains directly drilled into the tank with the pump pulling directly from the tank and obviously taking more water then a gravity feed that is my Closed loop part of my system DB and others i will have to do a much more detailed set of drawings with each part of my filtration seperatly I appoligize i thought it would be easy for you guys to see but obviously it is not i am used to looking at my system so i have no problem but showing others how it works i have come up short BIG TIME !!! i will do some better detailed drawings sorry guys!!!!Also DB when you do true herbie style drains the 1.5 drain actually creates a suction if you will and you achieve more gph!!!

Great thread, my only comment, some of the koi guys are moving to an anoxic filter system, has anyone tried that on an aquarium setting? Drawing a comparison between koi, and rays being roughly the same bioload. Some use plants, but they also have an anoxic basket that allows for BB to grow that eat the nitrates in the water. Be interested to see if it could work on a smaller scale. I hate water changes.
I disagree fully, but hey I am just running 4500gph and 4 filter socks, 650ish gallons total. They are easy to change and far cheaper than just about many other filter type. Yes you have to replace them and clean them at different points, but like any filter you have to clean it. Just like someone cleans a bead or glass, or sand filter weekly or a canister, I clean my filter socks weekly, and if you dont notice them getting full on a tank then your not making sure everything is running well on your tank and maintaining it properly. Hence the dead fish. Not the filter socks fault. That is the fish keepers fault 100% not maintaining his system.
Here's another interesting system I've seen for mechanical and pre-filtering. It uses a centrifugal solids-separation technique. Can filter down to 20 microns. Max flow of 7920gph and goes for $525.

It's a very simple concept that wouldn't be hard to do on a pond. But on a tank, that might take some creativity

You have your sick tank connected with the whole system? Is this a true sick tank, where you add meds and treat fish?

I researched the cyclone/vortex type prefilter a few months ago when I saw a version of it for sale on aquaticeco. Ill try and dig up some of the bookmarked links on my computer at home and post them later.
What I can remember that turned me away from them was the units were primarily for the smallest of particles and required some type of prefilter before them to catch larger solids so the cyclone did not clog. Also they needed a great deal of pump pressure to work properly.
