A buddy of mine was in Uruguay earlier in the year, he brought back four of these guys and I was lucky enough to get them into one of my tanks. I haven't kept any Pikes for a couple years, but, I was itching to get some into my tanks agian :headbang2. They are reduce to three now (the one wouldn't eat anything) but are growing nicely and the largest is about 5" tl up from around 2". Can anyone share experiences with these guys?

Here are a couple shots . . .

I am booked to head to Uruguay in March, I SOOOOOOO excited already. . . it's going to be a very long winter

Ray (thanks for looking)

Hi Ray ~ welcome to the forum! First of all I want to say your pics are Superb!!! We have a pair 6"+ that are in separate adjoining tanks - constantly in motion & trying to attack each other. Caught in Uruguay last November by our friend Ken Davis while collecting with Felipe Cantera/Aqvaterra. Is that where you're going in March? You're in for a great adventure.... Sorry to hear one of your 4 would'nt eat, wild caught Pikes can be difficult. Good luck with the others - they look like beauts!
We previously had a pair, female died, male was at least 8" when he mysteriously passed.
Punctata are nice medium sized pikes, really like all the spots. There are a few varieties, even a blue.

Thanks very much for the welcome and the info. These ones are supposed to be the blue variety and yes, they were collected with Felipe. I am booked to go out there with Spencer Jack here in Winnipeg, my goal is to collect sub-adult pairs of Creni.

I'll try to keep a log of the changes in color over the next few months on these guys/gals, it will be interesting to see how they turn out.

WELCOME!! Great to see another Crenicichlaholic amonst us! :D

Thats awesome! Gorgeous pictures!! Punctata are some crazy awesome pikes for sure!! :D

Thats awesome about going with Spencer, hopefully you guys will be able to nab some more of the celidochilus! :D

Thanks for the welcome, I am a longtime "Crenicichlaholic", I had to take a break and got into Tropheus for a while. . . I feel much better now! Celido's are one of my targets, I saw some of the ones Spencer brought back one of the first times he went - FANTASTIC!

Hi guys!
Ray; the Crenicichla cf.punctata "Blue 33" is the one you have (from Valentines in 33/ central-east).
In nature, adults get blue/dark grey

Then we have C.cf.punctata "Alferez" (Rocha/east) ; grey
and C.punctata "Yaguarón" (Cerro Largo/ north-east) green/dark grey

Can't wait to get there!

Has anyone had any experiences with these guys? I would love to spawn them in the futur, but I am unsure how to sex them - there doesn't seem to be too much info about them out there.

Thanks in advance,

Ray

I breed some pikes from Uruguay but never tryied with punctata.
I dont know why....but "sounds" difficult if I compare with other species from here..but I am not a breeder....I hope you try!
In march we are not going to any of the punctatas regions....but if you want I can keep a few for you?
I am going to do a lot of collecting in Cerro Largo, Rocha and 33 before you come.
