Crystal Clear Water for Large Tanks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a heavy stocked 190g and 10 mins after a messy feeding, my water goes crispy clear. 2x ac110s do mech, fx5 mech/bio, and a 55g wet/dry mostly bio. I find sumps are terrible mech filters, even with socks overflows just don't seem to be able to pull alot of particles from the entire tank. I know your tank is much bigger, I would run a few fx5s to do some good mech filtration for ya.

I have a large bio load in my 450, sock filters, and my turbo twist (i have the big one,36watt?) keeps my water clear. Now, if I can only stop the leeching from the driftwood.

Good luck

i think whathelps with mine is that i use scour pads for bio media under the polyfil floss and i have another layer of polyfill under all the scour pads as a final polish. 29 gallon tank and a 5gallon bucket stuffed with media keeps my 150 &240 crispy.with maybe 3x turnover on both. simple and very effective

I turn my lights on when I leave for work at 7 am and turn them off when I return at 6:30 pm.

I have tried a 25 micron pad on my drip tray before but the water flow was too fast for it and I was afraid I soon would have a flood on my hands. I would like to avoid anything that would need to be changed every 2 days and possibly cause a flood as my wife would have my scalp if that occurred.

I would need to research UV lights as I have know idea how they work or are used.

My water is fairly clear when I skip feeding for a day or two. When I feed daily there is basically fine particles in the water.

I think adding an FX5 might be the way to go but floor space behind the tank is at a premium. If I try to add something to my current filtration system it needs to be something that can handle approx 4000 GPH.

Feeding will always make your water murky or u see fine particles floating around. That's normal. It usually takes few hrs or more for my water to clear up after feeding. You could run a UV off the fx5 so the flow rate won't be too strong. I'm running a UV off a separate pump in my sump instead of running it off the return pump.

Give me a few weeks getting a 450 this weekend. Should be interesting. I plan filter socks would like to so a setup where I run 200 and 100 micron filter socks. I want to try a UV setup I guess this tank is going to come with one. Still waiting till I get the tank and sump setup to re-engineer everything. Nice thing is that it's an L shaped tank so I will have lots of room for everything.
