Crystal Clear Water for Large Tanks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I use a Hayward EC40 DE filter ($220 on amazon) and my water is always perfectly crystal clear, You can follow the link in my signature for my install log if you are interested.

i see this is a pool filter. is it very loud?

I am currently running mine from the Quiet One 3000 pump in my sump. So no noise at all!

The filter self purges very well so I have never noticed any gurgling except when I initially setup the filter when it was completely empty. With my big pump there were no noticeable air escaping noises after 5 minutes of initially turning it on for the first time.

The plumbing connectors of the filter are setup for 1.5 inch plumbing to support the huge volume needed for filtering pools. I am running it with 1 inch plumbing and a tiny pump compared to what it was designed for. The water flow paths are so big there are no water rushing noises when in operation at aquarium flow rates.

My big gamble when I purchased the filter was that it would function properly at the low flow levels used in aquariums. Even with my tiny Quiet One 3000 the filter is doing its job extremely well. My tank just always has crystal clear water ALL the time. Never any cloudiness, never any suspended particles, columns of light aren't visible since they have nothing in the water to reflect off of and "I" perceive a curtailment of algae spread... but I would question my algae control claim as pretty dubious.

When my 110g leaked and I had an emergency move to a 35g hex tank my fish were very visibly stressed... I didn't have any disease issues during this time of high stress. So I believe the claims that DE will filter out fungi and parasites.

As I mentioned in my thread... this is the lowest maintenance filter I have ever owned.

I will warn you another member did note the filter is bigger than he expected.

I've decided to give Purigen a try and will be ording some shortly. Eventually I should probably look into picking up an FX5 as well. The combo of the two will probably keep my water crystal clear.

Thanks for all of the suggestions.

i have just purchased a 6 x 2' tank with a 4' sump the sump, i have sponge fine and course, over 200 bio balls, then into 8ltrs of seachem matrix, and 2l of eheim substrat pro a little over kill i know, my water turns between 6-8 times per hour. I have set this tank up as a biotype for my oscars but it was previously a salt water tank, my water is cloudy i flushed the system over and over before setting up, do you think it is salt, bacteria, or ?????? please help frustrated as...... i have tried carbon to little avail!!

What are your water parameters? How did you cycle your tank?

i am currently cycling by adding seeded media and cichlid hybrids from my breeder, although i am not a great lover of the fish cycle they are hybrids so.... and those that make it will be food for the fish who are about to call this tank home. Nitrite 0 amonia 0 nitrate 5 (which can be found in our town water at times) so not shore if there is any cycle at all yet

UV wouldnt help make crystal water. Water change can make crystal water but lost bacteria.

Any (cotten, wool, socks etc),Purigen,Ozone,Eco aqualizer and Denitrate or Orca Nitra-Guard :headbang2:headbang2:headbang2

My only experience with cloudy water was a major bacterial bloom in an uncycled tank. Do water changes and monitor your parameters very closely.

i hsve wool pads on the top layer of my sump, i dont like the filter wool as it breaks down real quick, i haven"t used socks how do i do that? other than carbon havent really used chemical before either, not sure about it???
