NBK, very nice glad to see you finally got wha you wanted. Just think if they pair up and mate you could be main stream in yuor area .

Oddly enough.... I think they are starting to breed already!

They've gone mental!

Sorry to hi-jack the thread NBK, but this seems to be Texas central. Haha. I'm quite suspicious as to what breed my Texas is. After looking at Carpintis pics, I've noticed he doesn't have worming all over his face, but he's not green. He's almost more blue than anything. And his mating dress is the three black stripes with the black under-chin and belly. Any ideas?

Make sure she has a spot that the male can't get to her. IME they get along well enough until they tire of raising fry and that is when he will be real hard on her, at least until they ready to breed again. Then she will start pushing back and darken, like now. The "breakup" gets worse after every breeding.

wow, there are some beautiful fish photos in here! I only have one Texas but I would love to get another one if I knew if mine were male or female ... I can't find them around here either.

I love him to death, he has so much personality & he is very destructive with the plants in the tank. I keep planting them back b/c it amuses me to lay in bed & watch him mess with them. We keep bets on how long it will take him to pull them up. lol

Hmmm... Not sure to be honest. Do you have any closer up shots?
I'm certainly not experienced enough with this fish breed to be able to correctly tell you exactly what it is - but I'm sure someone will!

Don't worry about the high jack - the more the merrier I say!

I'll keep an eye on it and make sure that she's alright. So far she seems to bet he more dominant one between the two.

The way they fight off the other fish in the tank is quite impressive. My male had a stand off with my big O - and won! Never saw that coming. My big O is even reluctant now to swim past their spot.

Yes, I've noticed this as well - I don't know if they are maybe in breeding behavior - which I think they are, but they have totally redecorated my sand. They've just moved everything where they want it to be and built themselves a little fortress! Rather impressive!

If anyone else has any photos or anything Tex/Carpinte related please feel free to add and just join along :)

its a female i believe, at this size, you can certainly see its vent. If its pointy(needle-like), it is a male. If its blunted(like a straw), then its a female. and thats a cyano, texas cichlid. Not carpintis.
In addition, if its a female, you can still breed her and shes ready to breed anyway. If its a male, it would be too aggressive to meet a new mate.

This is the only one I've got. He's a bit timid and I have alot of frontal obstructions now. Is it possibly a Cyano?

What a cute little fish! :)

There has been strange behavior in my tank. It seems that my male carpinte and male con have become the new best friends - and the female carpinte is like an angry girlfriend. The con and the female carpinte have had a few little fights - its all rather amusing to watch actually.

But, my hopes of the carps actually breeding now have kinda gone :(
