Cutting Arowana Fins?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't really get it when people say not to do something to a fish because it's "not natural"... There is nothing natural in keeping a wild animal in a glass box.

But back on topic, if you intend to cut your arowana fins, gills or tail, and I believe the OP is talking about an Asian Arowana, I would suggest strongly that you sedate it first. A fish, especially a big fish, out of water, will flip all over the place, making it really hard to give it a clean precise cut. There is also the risk of the fish injuring itself, broken pectoral fins and what not...

Also note that Transmore is illegal over here, at least in Canada. A good alternative is a product called Asian Stabilizer, by Ocean Free, easily found on Ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/150-ML-OCEAN-FR...0?hash=item2e9c4e032b&_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116
Ordered it a few times, it works wonder. And excuse my spelling mistakes it there are some, I am French Canadian...

Well said Eken! :clap Thanks for your information on sedative :)

lets see where to start... DE can do it will do it(if necessary). tail cutting for cosmetic purposes isn't that big of a deal to me. that is, as long as it is done correctly. i don't consider it animal abuse because fish probably don't feel pain like we do. furthermore, cosmetic surgery is done all the time on all sorts of animals. ie tail docking, ear cropping, dental work, removal of unwanted scales, even nail trims...

Here is some before and after pics i found of a red of the bottom fin that was cut .

An asian arowanas tail is like a lizards tail, when stressed an arowana can drop it's tail and when conditions are not perfect the tail can grow back deformed. It is a common practice to "trim" the fin to allow it to regrow back straight. For those individuals that had their animal drop their tail, it is very important to add vitamins A and C in the water for normal fin growth. Without this, fin rays can start to curve. Vitachem is a good and easy source of these vitamins. Just add it to their food or water during the regrowth period. For trimming the fins, I would slit the area between two rays to separate what you want to save and what you want to trim away. Try Trimming as close to the peduncle as possible but making sure not to damage any part of this area. I would leave at least 2mm of finnage. Finquel is a good and safe anesthetic to use. You can obtain it from Argent labs.

just because they do not scream when you hurt them or some other fish starts biting them does not mean they do not feel it.

not saying cutting the fin hurts them but they do feel pain any animal with a nervous system feels pain.
