Cutting Arowana Fins?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
unless the fin is infected, why cut it for your visual purpose.
natural is good i think
its like cropping dogs ears, abit mean.

if you can avoid the stress, i think just leave it

This may be a little off topic, but what the hey. If you could successfully do surgery to fix you arowanas DE, would/should you?

If i could find someone to do it yea for the fish not to look like its in pain(even though it may not be)

I wouldnt trust my hands though :(

Yeah, I don't think I would do DE surgery myself. Wish I could find some one that knew what they were doing, I would definitely have it done.

This has been a very interesting thread:popcorn::popcorn::popcorn::popcorn::popcorn:
But what is the correct answer????

If in fact, the Aro IS DISFIGURED, OR DISFUNCTIONAL, due to tears in the fin should it be operated on?? I too have Aro's and none of them are in such condition. But, I think it would be helpful and useful information to have... Sometimes the fins tear from normal everyday ****. But if it's "disfigured" and effecting the fish's functionality could/should it be done?

Just had a question because i recently cut my arowana fins because they didnt look so good. I was wondering if anyone tried doing this and could show me some before and after pics?

Well, past the "best course for the fish" pros and cons, let's explore this a little. For purely visual effect, anyone would say don't do so. I've seen some giant gourami's come into the lfs that have magic marker designs on their sides and even something so common should be left out of the hobby. It's only a few steps away from tattooing your animal, or even better using the free space for advertising.

Now if aros are anything like betta's, the showers will nip and trim to provide for that excellent look. No big deal as long as the fins are not nipped too low. If they are trimmed too close to the body, they won't grow back right. In our's he's getting older and his fins have never stopped growing. Not nearly his original majestic beauty, but I can't imagine trying to sit him down long enough by any means to trim the fins. All in all, we really have to ask why we have the fish. For personal preference, I tend to go with nature. Trust me it is a fine line to try and walk. Unless the fin poses an obstacle to the day to day survivability of the fish, leave it be.

Just my two cents. Swim on!
