Cycle and Ammonia, Day 3

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would continue with daily 50% water changes until you see the Ammonia level drop. That is extremely cloudy water that happens when the water parameters are really out of whack.

What size is the tank?

What kind and how many fish do you have in it now?

Are you using any water conditioner (dechlorinator) when you do your water change?

What is the temperature of your aquarium?

55 gallon
1 pink gourami
2 dwarf gourami
2 balla sharks
1 peacock eel
1 african butterfly

I added an additional canister filter PLUS the power filter, cut feedings to every other day.

I was using safestart, but have switched to prime & stability
Temp is around 78-80

I was also told to leave the tank lights on longer than normal, yes?

I would keep the lights on for 8 hours, I don't think any longer will help you at all. Is this tank getting any direct sunlight during the day?

I've been reading your other posts, so I'm guessing you've had this problem on this tank for a couple weeks, correct?

Is this the same tank that had the Ich outbreak?

Are the Prime and Stability the ONLY products you are now using in the tank?

Not much direct sunlight at all, maybe 20 minutes in the evening, but just spots of the tank get hit.

It is the same tank that had the ick outbreak a few weeks back, but the cloudiness just started on Sunday i believe, was just every so slightly cloudy on Sunday so I added a little water clarifier, haven't since then though. The ammonia levels were completely fine until Friday, which is when the spiking started, and I have been doing daily water changes since then, as well as adding ammolock.

When I wasn't using prime, I used safestart and ammolock, but now I'm using prime, ammolock and stability, that's it.

Stop using the Ammolock since you are using Prime. They are sold for the same purpose but many people, myself included, prefer Prime.

The water clarifier may have compounded your existing problem. Stop using it.

Just stick with the Prime, Stability and 40% to 50% daily water changes until your water parameters are under control. Don't mess with the filters unless they are filthy dirty.

If you don't see an improvement in a couple days, try removing that Eco Bio block thing you have in your tank. I've read the advertisement but am not personally sold on the product.

Continue to feed lightly as suggested by other posts. Only check the Ammonia levels until you see them become reduced. Then check the NitrIte level to see if you have any. You are probably starting the fish cycle all over again because of the Ich medicine issues affecting the good bacteria.

Keep us posted in this thread please.

+1 on this.
I myself used Seachem Prime, API Stress zyme and did 20% water changes daily on a 360gl and it took bout a week and a half. Hardest part was the PATIENCE part. Goodluck

It was every so slightly a little clearer than it has been this morning, enough to find 1 casualty and to take count on the rest of the clan. Improvement in my eyes since it's been so bad I haven't even been able to see the eel when it's feeding time. I'll do another change tonight and hope to see more improvement in the morning, the bio stone has been in there for a month now, so I am not completely sold on that being the reason, but nothing is out of the questions right now.

finally made a little progress today.
ammonia went from 8.0 to 1.5... Woo boo! Nitrates and nitrites are still reading 0. The cloudiness is down a little, but still abnormally cloudy, hopefully better in the next few days. Now my puffer tank has ick, I just can't win can i?
