She has also been doing large daily water changes to get the high Ammonia under control so that may be why she is not getting any NitrIte readings yet.
Jen, just follow the instructions on the test kit and you should be fine.
And I was correct in doing the test wrong, I added both sets of drops instead if adding, shaking, adding lol.
water is still cloudy, but not near as severe, still adding the prime and stability after each daily change, hopefully seeing some progress this week.
White milky/cloudiness is from a precipitate of ammonia common to sudden, high ammonia spikes. The nitrosomonas bacteria will begin to consume that precipitate and that's why you're starting to see a slow clear up. The precipitate is too fine to be removed by mechanical filtration. Sounds to me like something you added along the way wiped out your bacterial colony and now you're back to cycling again. I have found ammolock to actually hurt in my cycling adventures, as I just moved and am battling crappy city water. I had a bad chemical reaction with the ammolock and something in the water and almost lost my favorite rtcxtsn! I'm finding that the city water is literally setting my cycling process back everytime I do a water change, regardless of pre-treatment with dechlorinators. I was using prime for the longest time with my tanks (r.i.p - had to go with the old house) and now I'm finding there's nothing out there quite like it. Water changes are great unless they're killing off your bacteria! Someone above mentioned patience, and I think it's a virtue to be regarded highly during cycling. My previous 300 gal tank cycled in 2 weeks; yet a 55 I had took over a month. Who would have guessed?
The cloudiness is a heterotrophic bacterial bloom from the super high ammonia levels, not ammonia precipitate. You will need to do daily water changes until your tank is cycled, probably another month if your fish survive which is unlikely. If they die you will be better off and the tank will cycle faster.
The tank has been up for about 8 weeks now, the cycle restarted itself because of an ick outbreak, which the medication and frequent changes ruined the biological bacteria.
The fish are fine and happy and the cloudiness is almost gone.
I did another change lastnight but did not get a chance to do any readings, will report back again this evening.
soz im late back. when new tank cycling dont water change for 2-3week. bacteria must hungry and eat all ammonia and nitrite then throw each days Prime it help ammonia and nitrite. 4-6week all completed cycling.
