Sorry for your loss, it sucks when you have to get made at your family, especially little kids. But they definitely need to be made cry sometimes, they killed a living thing, and need to know even though its a fish its a part of the family too.
Last time I had family my husbands little brother who is 19ish? Decided to hock a loogie in my fish tank, needless to say I got furious freaked out even cried, I thought that was so disrespectful because he know how much I love my fish. So my husband kicked him out of the house. Nothing died but I thought that was really rude.

Well the solution to that problem for me is now for the last few years i visit everybody for the holidays so nobody visits me and my fishis stay safe
If i was a parent i would just make the kid do extra work or time out, no tv, or no video games. If you don't punish them than s/he will think it's fine to be a spoiled brat.
