damn NGT won't eat pellets! Advice please

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah IMO silvers and NGTs are the hardest to get onto pellets.

just don't feed anymore blood worm eat or die thats the rules in my tank i have never had any fish die no matter how expensive it is i stick to that rule

only a foolish fish will starve to dead when their is food in the tank

my NGT wouldnt eat pellets but thats all i fed now Ade owns it and it eats them fine

I actually have the same method and attitude when it comes to stubborn fish. But, damn the yellow on this fish a great! I'd hate to see it die. So, I've decided to feed it frozen blood worms marinated in garlic xtreme for a week or so. Then, I'll try sinking pellets or MP marinated in the same garlic. I don't really want to feed my fishes any MP for various reasons. Thanks everyone.

Last year, I picked up three ngts about 5". They only ate mysis shrimp and blood worms. One of them ate market shrimp after about three months. Later on I picked up two 7" ngts. The one I kept starved itself for about 4-5 months before eating market shrimp. It ate less than 10 feeders in between those 4-5 months. Few months ago, I picked up four 4" ngts. They all ate bloodworms but I sold them off before trying to convert them. Last month, I bought a 5" ngt from my friend. It ate shrimp and pellets before it came in my tank. It wasn't a hassle raising it because I didn't have to try to convert it. I paid extra for it knowing that it ate pellets and it had a bright orange coloration :headbang2. Imo, dats will starve themselves to death. I've had it happen to myself and seen it with my friends. I know we shouldn't give up when converting, but is it really worth it? You can mix shrimp or pellets with what the dats normally eat and hopefully they will eat it. You can also drop the food to where the water flows so it moves around the tank. If your dats stomachs look sunken in, I don't think you should continue starving while thinking they will eventually give up. You should give them what they normally eat after a certain amount of time and try again. This is just my 2 cents.

I'm not saying tiger will not starve itself, it has happened as posted, but it's vert very unlikely. (But sorry for those have have lost a tiger this way)
My 7 inch ngt was converted already when I got it.
I added 2 mr. 3 inch ngt 2 months ago. ALL I FED was pellets. 4 weeks later and all they want to eat is hikari carnivore.

Once you've done it a few times this way, you'll find it's the mist effective method. Atleast I did. All my tigers have been converted this way, 8 from 12 eat pellets staple. The longest was an old ngt that only ate bloodw. In a period of 8 months I fed it bloodworm once a month, all else pellets and prawns. Finally it ate prawn as staple. Each time it got too thin I fed bw so it wouldn't die. Most won't take that long though.

The only other way I do is marinate method, can take longer or quicker, depends on fish.

garlic is a waste of time

soak the pellets in blood worm over night then dump the whole lot in

My NGT is around 4.5" and he now takes Tetracichlid Jumbo sticks. He started on feeders, then i got him on dead feeders, then earthworms, then frozen bloodworms, then market shrimps covered in BW, then homemade, floating frozen stuff made of every kind of fish food (mainly shrimp and krill) gished together, then floating FD krill, then the sticks.

Mine had alot of pellet-eating competition though, with the haps i had in the tank with him, so he knew he needs to hit whatever hits the water.

If you can get him onto the floating krill, it shouldn't be too hard to get him onto the pellets since they look so similar. The protein content of the Tetra Sticks is very good too. You do need strong filtration as it clouds the water a bit.

Basically just do it gradually, and have competition with him.

wow that's alot of work and patience. i am impressed. you really do love your NGT don't you. i didn't have the effort so i just starved my NTT until they eats FD Krill and Food Stick Pellets by Hikari, and they did took awhile to convert but finally did.

GREAT NEWS!!!!

My NGT is now eating sinking Hikari carnivore pellets. This is how I did it:
I got it used to eating again by feeding it frozen blood marinated in Kent Xtreme garlic. I did this for about 3-4 days. Then, I continued this but adding the pellets to the marinate. Now, when I add the mix, it swallows whole pellets while eating the worms. My goal was to eventually stop feeding the worms altogether, but to continue marinating the pellets with garlic instead if necessary. I still have to get it to eat pellets alone though. Hope the helps others.
