hello. I have about a 4" datnoid that has been battling cloudy eye and possibly pop eye for about 3 weeks now. I have him in a 40 gallon breeder for over a year and I upgraded to a 75 gallon.( I know this is not sufficient for him full grown, but when he gets to big I will sell him to somebody who has a big enough tank) for now I really enjoy this fish. Anyway, due to space issues I couldn't cycle my tank. But I reused my established aquaclear 70 filter. I also put the biological media from my established aquaclear 50 into the 70. Along with these I added a new aqueon quietflow 75 and a fluval 406 canister filled with biological media and pot scrubbers. Idk if it was a waste but I also used a ton of tetra safe start. It's been exactly 1 month since the tank has been running. My ammonia is 0. Nitrite is 0. And nitrate are within safe zone. My datnoid for the first few days in the new tank looked great. He was eating pellets, had great coloration and was swimming around. Than his eyes started getting cloudy with a few white spots. He stopped eating for a few days. But than he started eating again. Now the past 4 days he stopped eating again and he hides a lot. He also is extremely dark. He will not come out in the light either. When the light is off I will see him out of his cave, but he is not very active. He kind of just stays in 1 spot. Yesterday I enticed him with minnows. I left the light off and threw them in and I saw him gulping them down. As far as his eyes, I have been using melafix for about 10 days. It initially helped a lot but now it hit a plateau and it's not getting better or worse. I tried a little bit of salt. 2 tsp per 5 gallon gradually but I didn't go higher because I didn't want to affect the biological filtration. I gave him a methylene blue dip yesterday but not sure if that helped. I was told my ph was extremely high, and that can cause cloudy eye. So I been using ph down as well. What makes no sense is my tap water is 6.0 ph. But my tank goes right to 7.6. (The highest my kit reads). The fish store is the one who told me it was around 8.0. Yesterday another fish store said I was around 7.2. So I am not messing with ph anymore. Now my only options are to treat my whole tank with erythromycin, or fill up a 10 gallon that I have with the 75 gallon tank water and treat just that with the erythromycin for 4 days. What do you guys think? Without feeding the datnoid and medicating the 10 gallon tank, do you think I can get away without an ammonia spike for 4 days? Or is this a bad idea. Sorry ahead of time for the long post and for any grammar mistakes. I'm writing this on my phone in the work truck. Thanks.

In the quarantine tank, I would use kanaplex since it can be absorbed through the skin.

Using the kanaplex medicated tank water, do methylene blue baths (1ml/gallon) for 30 minutes over the course of 7 days (different container than QT like a 5 g bucket). Also add 1/4 teaspoon of epsom salt per gallon into the bath, make sure to dissolve the epsom salt first.

You have to do a 4 gallon water change everyday in the QT. Everytime you do a water change, be sure to redose with kanaplex for the new water.

Will the fish be ok not eating for 4 days? Should I feed him some minnows again before all this? I forgot to mention I was letting the kanaplex get absorbed into pellets and I was feeding him them in the beginning. That may be what was initially helping the cloudy eye. But when he stopped eating pellets I obviously couldn't continue with this. Hopefully he didn't develop an immunity to kanaplex now!

The fish looks large enough to be fine with not eating for 4 days.

Dose the tank water with kanaplex. It doesn't need to be eaten to remain effective.

Are you feeding live minnows that you breed yourself?

Unfortunately, no. I am not breeding minnows. Like I said before, I had my datnoid eating pellets for well over a year. The minnows were only because he stopped eating the pellets. I know they carry a ton of diseases.

When you say dose the tank with kanaplex you mean the quarantine 10 gallon tank right

Should I risk putting my aqueon 75 filter on the quarantine tank? It should have beneficial bacteria in it by now. Or is that useless since I'm medicating anyway. I really didn't plan on leaving that filter on the tank anyway since I got the fluval 406, and the aquaclear 70 on the tank. (Trying to keep my mothers electric bill down as much as possible). Lol

You can put it in the QT tank, but I can't guarantee that kanaplex will not have an effect on the bacteria in the media. A fully cycled filter should have no problem, but one that doesn't have much bacteria could lose quite a bit of it.

Dose the QT with kanaplex.

Do you think daily methylene blue/epsom salt and kanaplex dips will work for 30 minutes a time? I'm worried about the 10 gallon quarantine not being cycled. So I won't be able to keep an eye on the fish when I'm at work. If it's a must I'm thinking of doing the dips daily until Friday. And than set up the quarantine. Since I am off Friday-mon.

Hey Rocksor! I did your suggested dip for 30 minutes yesterday with my tank water, methylene blue, epsom salt and i even added kanaplex. I didn't get a good look at his eyes but this morning when I approached the tank, guess who was there to welcome me? The datnoid was swimming around and even ate pellets! I'm sure this is a good sign. Hopefully we are moving in the right direction. I'm going to continue the dips for 7 days and see if it heals him fully.

Being that he's eating pellets again should I start letting the pellets absorb water with kanaplex in it and feed it to him? This is what I was doing before.

Good that he is feeling better. There is no need to feed the kanaplex. It works just as well since it is readily absorbed through the skin.

Is he still in the main tank or in QT?
