Datnoids, are they all wild caught?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They have been breeding them there in thailand for awhile now. But of course were not going to know it. Their not going to show us pics of their ponds and setups. They will not tell us secrets of breeding them. Its because this is their bread and butter. They are cornering the market. I'm very thankful to hear what they want to share and take it all in. I guess here in the states we should try and see what we can do to breed dats. I'm sure not many of us are willing to put our biggest tigers in a huge pond outside. Nor do many of us have the luxury of doing so. I am more than willing and ample to try and breed dats. But it will take awhile cause I dont believe my dats are all breeding size yet. So in the mean time, lets all be patient and listen to what others may want to share with us. If you think its bogus, keep it to yourself. Others may love to hear the tale. If you find it beneficial, good for you. Give credit and be thankful. Thats the great thing about this forum. People from all over the world can join together and share their passion for fish. Just my two cents. Thanks guys

thanks, sinister J,

i guess you made my point clear. it may be a hobby there but it is our bread and butter here and demand for it has been so high that quite alot of my friends fish has been confiscated in the past years trying to export them out. so now, instead, they cooperate with the fisheries dept to make it a Thai heritage and for the upcoming generations.

my new 10" wide bar is arriving in two weeks after my exchange of a siamese Carp with a friend, so i'll show you and i'll keep you posted with pics when its in the tank at home.

for now, this is just a brief pic of it at the backyard tank.

buy showing adult ST and 2inch ST is no prof that they are being bred

i can show you pictures of 2inch and 12inch ST does that mean im breeding them

i understand that you are saying that the thia people dont want to share their secreats on how to breed them as it they will lose money

BUT if they are breeding them why are they not selling them this makes no sence to me as the price of a baby ST is now 4 x more than it was a few years ago

I agree, if they are breeding them it makes sense that they will keep the method a secret but it doesnt make sense that the price keeps going up. I understand the demand is high but according to your claims the supply is there, do to successful breeding.

again i am not 100% against the claim that they are being bred on some level, i am just not 100% agreeing with the claim either as there seems to be limited supply of this fish that is apparently being bred.

I still havent heard anymore on the cross breeding and the breeding for a special look claims. What do you know that I dont about these claims?

even captive breed arent they illegal to export from thailand ??

I would like to add to this discussion. johntc was referring to me, the Thai LFS owner in the post above (#80). I am telling everyone that cares to listen that Datnoids are being bred in captivity in Thailand and other South East Asian countries (Vietname, Malaysia) TCZeli has every right to question the claim made by Lok Tiger Fish but I can tell you without hesitation that dats are being bred in captivity. They are virtually extinct in the wild. It is IMPOSSIBLE to collect enough wild baby datnoid in the numbers that we are seeing being offer other than those from farm raised source(s). The Thai fisheries department have bunch of information on these fish including information on how to breed them. As to the question as to “Why these baby dats are expensive when they are being farm raise”? The answer is that they are actually cheaper this year than last year. I opened my shop in January of ’06 and one of the first “exotic” that I ordered was baby dats. I was able to get 25 specimens all of last year. This year they are everywhere, and a lot less than what I was paying for them in ‘06. I’ve sold more than 100 this year and have another 50 or so being grown out. Yes dats are illegal to ship out of Thailand but that does not exclude other countries. They are available on transshipped list from Vietnam, and some times Malaysia. Most coming into this country are from Vietnam.

Like most claim on the internet, many are just rumors and partial truth or unsubstantiated but this one is indeed a fact. About 10 years ago people didn’t believe that you can breed Arapaima. Well today they are being bread as food fish in Brazil and in farms in SE. Asia. You wouldn’t believe that a salt water bumble bee grouper can live in fresh water nor asian arowan being bred in an aquarium (documented case in Japan 1988). There is lots of development that’s taking place that you just don’t realize. Watch, not in the too distant future you might see morph of dats such as short body, wild marking and perhaps different color variation due to selective breeding. Just look at how far asian arowana has come.
