David R's 2000L tank build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Haven't had to do many water changes, but there is a drain in the sump so water can simply be added to the tank for semi-automated changes, and there is also a pipe next to the tank that I can siphon into for removing waste from the tank. The red barrel is just filled with tap water to give it a chance to warm up, the room is heated to 22C and the tap water is only about 8C at this time of year. It is filtered by a large sump, all the details are in the thread if you look back thru it.

Lighting has been ordered, two 3' and two 4' units of these; http://www.current-usa.com/aquarium-led-lights/satellite-freshwater-led-plus

But in the mean time here's some fairly average pics taken with the current 4x T8 fluro lighting.

Angels, they seem to have lost their stripes since being added to this tank, not sure if it is stress or feeling comfortable, but they seem perfectly happy and healthy...

I'm hoping the new lighting will make it a bit easier to get some clear pictures, I probably need a bit more practice using the camera too! I couldn't seem to stop the big stump getting over-exposed and looking all bright and white. It was hard getting a good shot of the aro too, it doesn't sit still like the others and the crummy lighting tends to make it hard to focus on it, let alone get a good shot of the colours. I think part of the problem is that the 4' width of the tank is only illuminated by two narrow tubes sitting directly on top of the tank, the new LEDs will be raised up about a foot above the tank to allow the light to spread a bit more before hitting the water.

Can those lights be chained together to all operate with one remote?

Yes they all work off the same frequency so as long as all the receivers are in range of the remote you can adjust them all together. The only real downside with them as far as I'm concerned is that there is no built-in timer or ability all the different modes. Being able to set times for sunrise, full spectrum, sunset and moonlight would be great, but from what I've seen they are still a step up in quality and function over the cheaper units I've seen.

Knowing my luck they'll bring out a fully programmable model in a couple of months time...

Small update, I managed to track down some pothos last weekend, and have "planted" some in the tank and in the sump.

With the sump I replaced one of the lids with a piece of acrylic I had and put some holes in it for them. The roots will grow down into the settling chamber and will help pre-filter the water.

They're fairly new cuttings so don't have many roots, hope they'll take off soon. Might put a small led lamp above the ones in the sump.

I don't know how much current you have in your settling chamber, but pothos does much better with current passing over it's roots. youmay want to consider a powerhead to increase flow, otherwise I find the roots can rot.
