David R's 2000L tank build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just went and bought two more 300w heaters as I thought the three old ones were struggling to bring it up to temp. Set them to 27c, put them in and they didn't turn on. I thought the thermostats on the old ones may be a bit out, but decided to get the good thermometer off my other tank to check it. This is the difference between a $5 thermometer and a $40 thermometer...

I know the good one is accurate as I've checked it several times. So the tank was plenty warm enough without the extra heaters. You certainly get what you pay for with electronics!!

Yep. I know a guy who uses the cheap ones and "calibrates" them by comparing them to his expensive and accurate Hanna unit and writing the +/- difference on the thermometer! My one went in the bin though, 6C difference is just too much...

I've played around with the lights and the shadows from the bracing are unavoidable. So the 30W floods will be used for lighting the deck and bbq, and I'll be looking at either these;

or these;

Thinking four 36" units suspended about 20-30cm above the tank should work well.

I learned the inaccuracy of the coralife digital thermometer the hard way. Ended up getting the tank a bit too hot and killed many of the plants. At that time it was pretty heavily planted. I went back to an old school thermometer and haven't regretted it once.

The pictures a bit blurry, but you can get an idea of how planted it was. Most of them just melted. Iirc the tank ended up being in the mid 80s. The fish were all fine.

Frightening difference on those thermometers.

Funnily enough i had a similar thing today, my car read the atmosphere at 26 - 27 yet when i went in my fish house which was significantly hotter it read it the same when i know it was easily 30 + C.

This is using the same thermometer that reads my tanks.

I also have one of the larger ones that you pictured which works very well

How to you shrink six Geophagus? Give them a five-fold increase in tank size!

The altifrons are in and happily re-sorting their pecking order, and they look tiny! I love seeing small fish in big tanks.

The largest is about 17cm not including the extensions on the tail. At the moment the only decor is the big stump, and the fish seem to love having the large open space to swim in. I think I'll try keep as much of that as possible when I add the rest of the wood.

Todays mission is to make a drip tray;

Then perhaps tidy the garage a little...

ps. Sorry for the low quality pics of the tank, it's only got two old T8 fluros on it and I'm too busy sorting stuff out to get the good camera out and take some decent pics.
