David R's 370g thread...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
looks awesome.
with tanks - i have this inexplicable obsession with the filtration system.
there is something about a large filtration system that really excites me:D

looking forward to seeing this ones very involved and elaborate system!

i tried to convince david to stock this monster with monster fish, but he was adamant on a south american one:D
thought a few high grade aros would do it - remort the house perhaps??:P

The high grade aro is coming!! Got a call from the LFS to say they are going to be bringing some black aros in soon. So there will be a slight change in stocking to make room for one, no small fish, but this is the whole reason why I wanted such a wide tank. Talk about perfect timing; 1400L tank being set up, green aro sells, shop phones saying they should have some blacks coming in.
:D:D:D:D:D

Progress has been slow, found some good bits of driftwood but don't have anything big enough to soak them in. Finished carving the background today, was hoping to get the first coat of mortar on it before work but I won't have time. I've got late starts for the rest of the week though so hopefully it'll be ready to go by the weekend!

Got the sump today!! Will hopefully have a stand build for it and all the plumbing done this weekend. The background is done, but it needs two people to lift the big piece so I can't even take it outside to wash it as I'm on late shifts all week so I'm never home when Hannah is awake. I'm on standby tonight, so hopefully I don't get called in! Once the silicone has dried on that then I can fill it up!!!
Last weekend I checked on the teatree stumps I have soaking in the pool at my parents place and they've all sunk and should be ready to put in the tank after a good clean with the water blaster. Hopefully they counter the mortar from the background and keep the pH stable...

Pics;

Sump is 120x60x60cm, its divided in two so the water flows down a 20cm wide settling chamber then back through the filtration part.

This is the main piece of the background, its nothing flash or amazingly realistic, but when its 3' away in the back of the tank with big pieces of driftwood in front of it and a bit of algae then hopefully it will just blend in and look a bit more natural than a flat piece of black glass. The dark patch is where I sprayed it with water to show what it will look when wet, it looks way lighter when dry.

AWESOME!!! looks like your right on track for an amazing tank, can't wait to see this all set up and stocked, def get some more pictures of the sump and plumbing when you get it all hooked up :)

WOOO!!! Two months after delivery (damn I've been slack! no, I think thorough is a better word.... :D) it finally has water in it!!

I'm just going to fill and empty it for a few weeks using water from water changes from the other 4 tanks while the background does the worst of its leaching. I'm also soaking some big bits of wood in there which are still floating, I'll keep track of the pH to see how the wood and the mortar work against each other and where it sits. After 12 hours it was on about 7.4 which is a bit higher than ideal but certainly not through the roof. pH in the other tanks is around 6-6.5, except for the festae tank which is a bit over 7, so most of the water going into it will be acidic.

I still have some really big nice pieces of wood floating in my parents unused swimming pool, but I think they'll take months, possibly even years to sink.

I've decided to go for a large group of altifrons rather than a mix of random SA cichlids, I've got 12 in the 160g around 3-6" and am picking up another two this weekend. I'm going to thin them later on if/when required.

SWEET!! and 2 months!!! i think i would go stir crazy having that awesome of a tank empty for that long haha, keep the pics coming!! :)

Its nice to see the tank with some water in it ;) Seriously, I wish I could be as thorough as you, but I'm just too impatient. Anyways, I can't wait to see what the tank turns into.

still not done? cant wait to see it alll done

very nice
