I don't know if Sabinas will do this curling thing like 100% freshwater rays, but since my girl is still touch and go right now, I wanted to ask if anyone has pictures or can accurately describe what a "death curl" looks like? She's still swimming around and her disc is still smooth and waving when she moves, but I just want to know what to look out for. Thanks.

Well, I think tonight is it for her. I've found her flipped over 4 times in the past 12 hours, laying on the bottom of the tank belly-up, not even trying to turn herself over. Each time I turn her back over onto her stomach, she just kind of drifts, doesn't even swim. Her disc isn't curling, but I can tell that she's giving up. She's also lowered her breathing to being very shallow and long periods between each intake. She refused all her shrimp today as well. That damn change in substrate really screwed her up, and she never bounced back. I'm going to have a serious word with the manager at the store about recommending that sh*t to customers that buy their rays. I should have just kept the original sand, she was doing so great on it. Ugh. I feel like crap right now, I'm really upset. :(:(:(

I think I figured out why she's turning upside down. I check her multiple times per day since all this began and this just appeared overnight -- a red, sore spot in the very center of her stomach about the size of a quarter. The very middle of it is white, so it kind of looks like a ringworm spot like a human would have. I don't understand what would cause it, after I removed the problematic black sand, I left the tank barebottom in order to heal her sore fins, which did heal completely. So this is something new. Is there some kind of parasite, either external or internal, that would cause this? How can I treat it? Where would I buy blackwater extract? What about PraziPro?

OK, the spot today seems to have been something like a blister as it is open now and I see loose skin where it was. It's less red so I think it may be healing. Thoughts? Suggestions? I'm heading to the LFS tomorrow to pick up some SeaChem Paraguard and a few SC products that were suggested to me. Already did a 50% water change yesterday, should I do another change of any amount today or wait until tomorrow?

WOW, I have not heard of such an event yet. If you can provide any pictures to document this that would be very helpful.

By the way, if she doesn't survive and you are looking for a replacement, contact Kolosus.

I will try to snap something with my phone. My ex is an idiot and when he was over here visiting our daughter the other day, he left my camera outside and it rained...thus I no longer have a camera. :irked:

Let me see if I can get her turned over long enough to get a decent shot. It's really weird.

OK, this is the best I could get -- the spot is right in the center of her belly directly behind her gill slits.
