I run cartidge filters on most of my tanks under 1000 gallons. You can find various levels of micro filters to toss into them. I have a pair of old school Magnum 350s that I use on my 90 gallon. Bigger stuff I like Red Sea canisters. Same idea, just a bigger scale.

Are these types of filters very maintenance/replacement intensive when compared to, say, a wet/dry?

Very easy to clean. I love them. I've never been a big fan of the wet/dry sumps for my applications. But I do off the wall set ups to house fish.

With a standard bio-load (as in, when run along side other filtration methods that could do the job to a satisfactory level even without it), how often do you have to re-purchase the filter cartridges? (Do you have to, during the standard life of something like this?)

I'm thinking about running something similar on a 1200 gallon water system in the next month or so, as my current mech is giving me mixed results. I'm just a scrooge with space when it comes to tanks, as I am renting an apartment and every inch counts and I'm already running out of walking room (although we do definitely have some serious smiling room :) .)
