ya apparently no one can read, i mentioned above im NOT getting a ray nor have i said i want a rtc yet ... how im being stubborn is beyond me ... i asked a simple question and got simple answers, no need to carry on about all this other jazz you guys are going with

Several people have mentioned that Bichirs wouldn't make a good clean up crew and despite that you kept saying that's the direction your thinking about going. Oddball alone repeated himself several times to no avail with you. So put two and two together when you ask for advice and you get some and decide not to listen to it but still keep asking that's being stubborn or obtuse only you know which one for sure.

And ya all that other Jazz people are goin on about, it's called answering your question. For instance suggesting Hoplo cats etc. is answering what would make good clean up crew. Try not being so sensitive being a little stubborn isn't the worst thing in the world. I openly admit to being stubborn as well and I feel as much as it can be looked upon as derogatory it can be looked on as complimentary. It's pride that keeps us from taking bad advice, too much pride from taking good advice. A little bit of pride tempered by humility helps us be open to new horizons.

Very well said, and haven't seen one stated like this in quite some time, especially when a thread was getting ready to turn sour....now that I feel like I'm "out of the closet" and this thread at least knows I"m a female, since the hobby's pretty much dominated by men....

I only have hoplo's in with my stingray as "clean-up" although the OP said they weren't going with a stingray I believe. You were right about bichirs not being "clean-up" crews. I've had 2 in the past, 1 currently now which is my albino one that's 4-5 years old. As you said, it's another mouth to feed. Catfish do an awesome job at stirring up the sand, ,keeping the debris moving along to the filters, keeping dead pockets from forming withing the sand as well. Otherwise, we have to move the sand around ourselves during water changes. Thing with catfish is that the bigger variety can only be kept with certain other fish, or most likely by themselves. Have to prepare ourselves for that possibility. I have a flowerhorn cichlid I specifically picked out that has his own tank for in our bedroom, which I love...but has to be by himself. Just another example. Stingrays are now another tank...

Thank you, and don't worry about being "out of the closet" the fact that your a woman in to fish and a minority makes you unique which equates into you bein' cool. lol! The fact that you've taken an interest and do your research and are open to disagreeing points of view and open to compromise for your pets well being also makes you a great aquarist in m book. While no one can attain perfection in anything it's the active pursuit that makes us better.

I am sorry if I sounded whiney. But like I said, I have been given some great advice here. And you are correct that I am unable to tell tone via typing. Anyway I love this forum, and will continue to learn from you guys. Thanks.

Joey Paul

No worries I didn't consider you whiny just that a lot of people get sensitive when their opinions are challenged and I thought it was pertinent to mention we should shy away from that feeling. We are all learning here and no one has all the answers so being wrong makes you no worse than anyone else and we should realize that. We're here to learn and that goes from the newest member to the oldest. I myself am still learning and try humble myself so I can be open enough to accept the knowledge. As long as no one makes a personal attack on intelligence, personality, financial capabilities or anything personal we should take what is said in stride and with a grain of salt. Your appreciation of this forum and what you learned speaks loads more than a minor miscommunication.

So what size is your tank in the first post you say, 73x19x24 and later you say something about a standard 180, I know that the ornates get rather larger and would probably not be comfortable in a 19" wide tank, it would be better if you had the 24" wide tank, if you like the polys then get them but you could always add more sand sifters like the bigger geos. But really an arowana is a bad choice for either of those tanks and can grow to 18" within a year(or at least my two did) but you said you were upgrading but unless you do it soon most of your stock would outgrow a 19" wide tank, a 24" tank would be better but still not good for the long run, even a 300g is kind of small for an aro that reaches ~30". Just my two cents, enjoy :)

yes the tank i have right now is a 140g 72x19x24 and when i mentioned a 180g that was correcting the previous poster above about the size of a 180 as he was unsure of the dimensions.... and im planning on picking up a 36" wide 300g tank this summer hopefully

Um, post #36 "I only have hoplo's in with my stingray as "clean-up" although the OP said they weren't going with a stingray I believe"....just saying...that *I* can read!! lol but, I was going on about the rtc in this thread hoping to deter you away from getting the rtc as they are a HUGE mouth to feed and are more of a loner "pet" to keep. Our's is named Jaba, from Jaba the Hut (Star Wars). He is hand fed, and whiskers us in the face when we lift open the lids for feeding time....and I didn't see anything in your previous posts regarding to NOT getting a rtc, although this thread is a month old, and was hoping you didn't get one before doing the extensive research, lol. That's all. P.S., I special ordered my rtc from the lfs and waited months for him to come in at a "cute" 2 inch size. Now, he's a beast and still growing, but we love'em.

a rtc in a tank is a eating ghost macine, he eat very fast till his stomach fully filled. and when hes in a bad mood, his fins will hurt the rats and they swim rude.
best mate are arowana but better start with small size, otherwise huge aro comers will attack rays.

Must have some serious cash if an 800+ dollar leopoldi will be purshased for cleaning up lol! Rays are not known to be any sort of cleaner uppers, but may I suggest a motoro for your first ray.
