dude, you're multiplying by ONE! If you do 1x2, then add the one, you get 3. If you do 1+2, then multiply by 1 you get.....THREE! Even without your second set of parenthesis, the order of operations says you still automatically multiply before you add. Your second way is correct, but so is mine.
