Chris, this isn't just something that has been happening "lately". I couldn't even count how many threads and youtube videos I have seen sporting the sellers name along with the name of the fish. For example:
And that's not even counting the ones with titles like "female columbian umbee from ******".

Imo it's not all that bad of a thing. And it is sorta like buying a designer label (I've been saying the same thing for the longest). If a seller is supplying top notch quality fish, then I don't really see a problem with their happy customers advertising their names. If a seller get's to this point, it just means they're doing something right.

Exactly Dave;) I wonder If chris meant it this way? Maybe he can shine some more light on where he was actually going with this one:confused:

I buy from some of the big name vendors, not because they have designer or super fish, but to get the fish I want and to know that I am getting what is advertised. ie: lfs don't carry the fish I keep or when You order fish like festae you get uros.

I have to agree with this statement. For me personally it's not a "status symbol" I keep what I like and don't really care wheather any one else likes it or not, my fish, my money, my choice. I like to by from reputable dealers so I know I'm getting what I paid for (or at least hope I did). Once it's in my tank, it's not like it's a car it doesn't have "Caddilac" written on the side. But I do understand the point cchhcc is making.

I could personaly care less about were my fish come from as long as they are healthy. A nice fish is a nice fish period! Putting a name in front of it doesn't make it nicer. Anyone that buys fish just to post pictures on here and feel important isn't going to last long in this hobby anyway. They will fade out just like there super rare (often not that pretty) fish do.

I post pictures every once in a while but seldom do I put were they come from or what generation they are. The only reason I would buy a wild fish over a tank bred is to get new bloodlines or simply because I'm looking to breed them and F1 fry will sell better. Oddly enough when I do post pictures people mostly seem to like my F1-Fwhatever fish better anyway.

3/4 of the fish I keep are crypto's and madagascars which most people could give a rats ass about. Keep what you like and don't worry about the rest. I think it's funny when I have people from local forums or on here stop by my house and they are saying "dude, I didn't know you were into these other types of fish". I always just reply that I just like fish and aquariums period. Keeping a big mean CA fish doesn't make you cool or better then a person that breeds guppies. Ordering a fish online also doesn't make it nicer then one at a LFS.

I think it's rather helpful to note where a fish originated from when posting pictures. If, when selling a fish, the vendor knows that pictures of that fish will be splattered on the internet he'll probably be more concerned with quality control as to avoid having subpar specimens floating around with his name on it. On the flip side, when pictures and praise of quality fish get posted the vendor wins.
It's a similar scenario with f0, f1 fish. With it being rather difficult to prove the f# of most fish it is imperative that this info be documented. If there are inconsistencies somewhere, they're sure to come to light. Likewise, if I have an f1 fish that I have spawned it is very useful to have a thread on the forum about the fish that documents when and where I bought it, how it developed and when it spawned. That way, anyone buying the fry can look back and see the origin of their fishes.
What came first, the designer fish or the positive word of mouth?

I think the comment about the certain sellers representing quality is a good one, but that's more of interest to the buyer than the viewer of the thread. Plus, given the relative absence of any critical reviews of sellers on the forum all we end up with an unbalanced picture of quality.

Plus, at the end of the day, a picture of a juvenile cichlid is just a picture of potential in my opinion. I'm impressed with growth threads, show results, etc. that exhibit a keepers ability to successfully fill the needs of a fish over time, not just his ability to buy one only to lose it in a few months out of boredom (or worse).

Caribemob, I wasn't trying to be subliminal or deceptive with this thread. Posting specifics or calling people out would simply be rude.

Duly noted. Perhaps I can pose the argument that fishes in the trade are commodities and were so long before a vendor's name was attached to them. They are bought, sold and traded. Furthermore, I'd say that a fish that becomes immortalized on the web via photography is as much a commodity as the fish that is bought at petsmart and lives a long, happy life of obscurity in some guys tank- never photographed, never shared and never ogled over by envious fishkeepers on a fish forum.

Good to hear about ****!

What's ironic is that Stendker discus are "fancy" ones (i.e. intentionally bred to look nothing like wild ones)... so the whole F0, F1 kerfluffle is moot.

When it comes to wild / wild-type fish, reputations of vendors come from both the condition of the fish when they arrive (e.g. not diseased, not torn up) and the authenticity of the identification of what it is (verifiable collection locations, correct names, etc.).

Having a provenance on wild-type stock is important less for bragging rights and more for maintaining the authenticity of wild-type strains of fish.

This is one I totally agree with.I have talked with more than one lfs owner that has told Me that these are the only discus they have purchased that are consistetly heathly and always eat well. All these owners (3 to be exact) have been in business for more than 30 yrs and knew I was not in the market for discus.
