Devil Catfish : Bagarious

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Very nice, Neo! :) Yeah, I remember you mentioning getting these awhile back. How many you get total? and how big your largest one?

If wanna trade one for an irwini, lmk?!!

They are awesome fish, the only drawback is that they require cooler temps. I lost 3 smaller ones before figuring this out. I now keep mine at 70*, haven't had a problem and it eats like a champ. Its put on solid 5" and lots of mass.

WoW! Incredible looking Bagarius speciman, Tigerfangs!!...

A 17inch Yarelli is not a very common sight to see in a home aquarium... that cat is a beast!! Is it in your 900g w/ ATF, or other tank? If any, what tankmate(s) do you have housed with it? What's their growth rate like? and what is their current diet like?

I have always been fascinated by these cats and have been wanting to get one now for quite sometime... Couple things I'd like to know about??... and since you have this 17" MONSTER, I would love to hear from your own personal experiences with them.

----------------------------
Just how BAD, is their actual temperment like? Are they extremely mean like Mystus sp.? or more like RTC? Will they quarrel for territory with other fish?

How is they're EATING/FEEDING behavior like? Do you think or feel, personally... that other smaller (or of equal size?) fish/ tankmates are in danger of keeping with it? (Being eaten? attempted to be eaten? fights?, knocturnal behavioir?, etc.).

You mentioned keeping them in cooler water temperature being better for them?... if kept in lower 70's, do you think that high oxygen levels is still an important factor to consider, as compared to keeping in higher temp. waters? (Or do they require fast current flow like payaras?)

I am very seriously considering on getting one now... To keep with a pair of other fish that have, with very simialr tank requirements (temperature, water conditions, biotope, etc.). tankspace should be plenty, so I'm not worried about that? Sorry for the '51 questions'... but any feedback from u would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for ur time, bro!

Thanks Phully. It is a cool cat!

As for the questions, no prob.
It is in a tank all by itself in a bare (except for sand) 90g tank (got a 180g waiting). They don't require much space since they are rather lethargic until feeding time and then its ON...

The main reason its by itself right now is that I keep it at very low 70s and the rest of the fish are tropical. I have read that they will attack all tankmates, but neo keeps more than one together. Who knows, maybe as they get bigger, they get real nasty to the point that they can't be kept with anything. They are nocturnal, but I feed mine during the day, and like I said, it cruises the tank like a shark. Could be its size, and how it isn't scared of anything and always wants to eat. :swear:

Their (Yarrelli) appetites are huge. Mine can easily eat 5-6 large shrimp tails or whole smelt (4-5") in a single sitting and want more a few hours later, but I feed mine every other day.

Growth rates are fast. The person I bought this guy from said that it grew from 4-5" to 12" (w/out streamers) in 4mo. He decided to sell it when he noticed some of his other catfish disappearing. I bought it in the spring this year and didn't feed it much because I didn't want it to grow too quickly, but it still put on a solid 5" of body growth and a hell of a lot of mass.

I've read that they require a good amount of current and lower temps 65-74* (planet catfish), so I made sure that tank had plenty of it (400gph P/H and Mag7 returning water from the sump), and it stays where the current is strongest. I don't run air pumps on any of my tanks.

If you can provide these conditions, go for it! They may be boring at first, because they seem lazy and if you give them a place to hide they will. However, as they get bigger, you can readily see the teeth and their disposition changes because they don't fear anything, then they are anything but boring.

Neo, beware of the high temps! I grew one to over a foot in a 80-85 degrees. The best thing was he wouldn't anything but commercial sinking pellets. Then in the summer time when it got really hot here, the water got up to 90 and above. That was enough to kill him. I think the threshold is at about 85 degrees.

They look like beasts.

If I didn't have to keep it cool I'd get one, I don't have a tank spare to do that.
