My Kamfa-RTH used to have long, wispy dorsal and anal fins. While not characteristic of a true Kamfa (more like a ZZ Dragon's), I quite liked them. Recently, they disappeared overnight. At least an inch on both fins just gone...

And I'm 99.99% sure it's not a bacterial or fungal issue -- it happened a week ago and he's showing absolutely no other other signs of tail rot etc., no flashing, they're not getting any shorter nor do they have any white or black fungus around them. No other fins are affected, just the 2 long wispy ones.

I need input from others, but I think I might have accidentally 'burned' them off....

And after pic today (a week later, no difference from the 1st day I discovered):

Water parameters are normal as usual, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite & 20-40 ppm nitrates.

Here's what I think happened but am open to other ideas:
-- I normally add aquarium salt during every other weekly 45% water change. But this is added into the 20L jugs of filtered/sterilized well water I have delivered to the house every week and it's largely dissolved by the time it goes into the tank.
-- Last week Drakaris whacked into a power head outlet during aggressive feeding and got a minor wound on his left flank.
-- As it's in the middle of usual water change schedule I just mixed up some salt (to aid healing) into about a liter of water, and without it being fully dissolved poured it into one end of the tank while he was at the other end.
-- Unfortunately he got curious and zipped down to the other end, straight into the still falling crystals of salt.
-- I wasn't happy about that but I didn't see any immediate effects and as it was near his bedtime I turned off his lights and covered his tank to block my room lights.
-- Next day (about 12 hr. later), I turned on the lights and shockingly noticed his beautiful long fin ends were gone.

Again, no change since then and he's his normal active/aggressive, eating like a race horse self -- do you think I burned them off or is there some other explanation I'm missing?

You say something about power heads? What type? Most likely got too close and fins got pulled in and snipped by the impeller. Had it happen to one of mine before. In any case. . . they will grow back

Thx for the input DB, I should have clarified they're 2 small Sobo internal filters I use for water flow and polishing; the impellers are totally encased and there isn't that much suction at the filter box ends. Also the fact both fins lost almost exactly the same amount would be too coincidental.

But yes, certainly hoping they do grow back at least to some extent :)

They tend to get cut off from age or scraping there fins on the substrates. He looks better now tho.

Thx too for chiming in NS, he's about 15 months old now, and not much in the way of substrate in the tanks, mostly bare bottom, but it's possible he lost them doing 360 rolls in his house as he sometimes does.

Overall though I'm still leaning toward that aquarium salt shower as the culprit.

don't worry. they usually comeback after some time. btw nice looking kamfa bro. :)

Thx, I sure hope so Paolo -- but getting a tad worried as it's been about 12 days and the 2 fins haven't started growing back (in fact I'm not 100% sure, but it looks like the bottom one might have gotten even a tiny bit smaller).

I'm still really stumped by this, and thinking to treat with some fin rot med for a couple of days just in case (even though he's not showing any other typical symptoms associated with fin rot, let alone any white or black growth around the fin ends).

Was even wondering if it could possibly be a stray voltage related issue, as I realized around the time this problem started I had also put a (kinda cheap Chinese submersible) digital thermometer (with electric cord, not battery). I doubt this it, as no other fins are affected, but just in case I've removed it for now and will buy a voltmeter later today to check for sure.

Do not add meds. Whatever happened is a done deal now, and what's left looks healthy. They should grow back with time.

Drakaris and I were praying to the fish gods you'd offer some input RD, looks like they were listening, and great timing too, I was just about to add some fin rot med in the next 10 mins...

So Thanks for your advice (and I feel better because a big part of me hates adding meds to fish tanks), I'll axe that plan (unless perhaps I see any further noticeable deterioration),then go ahead and install a new Eheim Reeflex UV sterilizer but was waiting due to possible med treatment.

However, as a future preventive approach I'm still super curious as to how he lost them... do you think the salt falling directly onto them could have done that?

Also this might be stupid but I was just wondering if he fell asleep near a mid-sized air stone with a high flow rate of small bubbles, could these possibly 'burn off' the fin ends? (One of his favorite parking areas is near an air stone that was moved closer to where he often hangs out/dozes; I've now moved it farther away but he still gets close; these pix were taken 5 min. ago).

Or maybe he just wanted to look more in line with classic Kamfa standards lol so magically shed them :) I simply have no idea; would really appreciate your best guess RD.
