While browsing my local Petsmart for a few Tiger Barbs, I noticed they started carrying Flowerhorns finally. Only one in the tank and it was $25, no thanks. I keep looking and I spot what I THINK it another flowerhorn isolated in another tank with no product stickers or price on it. Figuring I could pull a fast one, I asked the young man working the department what it was and he replied it was a Salvini, same as the fish in the tank above it (obviously wrong) and it was on sale for $5. I told him to bag it up for me. At checkout, I used a $3 coupon and ended up paying only $2.19. Did I cheat the system and use the employees lack of knowledge to my advantage? Did I really just pick up a Flowerhorn for 2 bucks?

Hello; If it truly is a flowerhorn, then yes to questions #1 and #2. If it is not a flowerhorn, then you went for #1 and no for #2.

What you've done is paid $2 for a worthless fish to an establishment that has no business selling selectively bred fish in the first place. It looks like something an actual breeder would have culled. From the fish farm to the wholesaler, and from the wholesaler to the store there is no quality control. Then the customers like you give them money so they think they should get more. Get in touch with a local breeder or fh hobbiest, you could get a high quality fish for a similar price at a similar size without supporting the people who don't care if you get a good fish or not.

I wouldn't lose any sleep over this. Besides, you'd probably paid the right price for it anyway

I don't lose sleep over anything, especially words on an Internet forum. I've seen several very nice flowerhorns come from petsmart. If I was concerned about buying a quality fish, I certainly wouldn't be buying a hybrid in the first place lol

Not sure if you're specifically directing this post directly at my post or not. When I stated "I wouldn't lose sleep over this" I meant that I would be conscience-free of getting this fish at apparently the wrong price. Also, I don't really give a cr@p about what someone considers "high quality grade" either. I like a fish, I buy a fish.......nothing more to it than that.

No not at all, I agree with you 110%. My post was more directed towards the one who insisted I wasted a mere $2 on a fish at a bad establishment that the breeder should have culled. I don't feel bad at all for paying $2.19 for my "Salvini"

I got mine, whatever hybrid it is, by telling the girl it was a red devil. It was on closeout for 4 bucks.
