thats a flowerhorn, low grade just means it looks more like one of the fish in its lineage than a line bred fish, if people wanna be jerks and get hung up on whos is better more fool them. prob gonna look very trimac as it grows which isnt a bad thing at all, gonna have all that trimac attitude too. good luck with the fish pal!-)

I got a fader for 4 bucks. It was labeled Red Devil. I've never even seen one locally. At the end of the day hybrid purists are idiots. I don't even have a privately owned LFS anywhere near me. Of my 30 fish if I were to add their prices together I probably could've gotten one F1 something online. Not that there isn't anything wrong with buying a high quality fish. I'm just not an independently wealthy fish enthusiast with money to burn.

Seems like a good deal, I agree with xraycer, if you like the fish, get it. I've kept a couple of cichlids that should've been culled but turned out to be quite fun to keep.

In my opinion a low grade FH is a better quality fish than a high grade one, as it is closer to it's original lineage.

We will see what he turns into as time goes by. He is very small, maybe 2" right now.

There are probably breeders close to you just sitting on nice fish and you are throwing money at garbage, to people who do not care about quality or you as a customer (at least you ripped them off right? What goes around comes around...) If you want a selectively bred fish get them from somebody who actually selects them haha. If you aren't a fh enthusiast why buy a fh? Why post on a fh forum?

Low grade fh are better because they are closer to original lineage? What does that even mean? You are saying you want a hybrid that more resembles a pure trimac or something? What's the point in that just get a trimac. Low grade fish released to the public do nothing good for the hobby either the fh keeping hobby or the pure cichlid keeping hobby. Learn a little about hybrids and breeding for traits before your fingers type and nonsense is spread.

Yep Aqua Aggro is probably right. Actually there's a flowerhorn on craigslist right by me now that's gorgeous high quality Kamfa type -tons of pearls.....yeah it's also 200.00 LOL
My 4 dollar fader probably won't look as cool but I like it and at the end of the discussion that's all that matters.

Get them young and they are cheaper. It's like a universal fish thing. Larger fish that are more developed and display all the traits that make a good fish of a certain strain or breed will be higher priced while the younger and smaller ones are cheaper. At least from a breeder who knows what they are doing you will actually get a fish with potential. Support those who support the hobby. Petsfart and co are fine for supplies or generic pure type fish but special breed type fish do not belong there. Even their bettas are bad I seen one recently that had the spoon notch spinal deformity. Never even seen that deformity in a betta before, all I had to do was go to petco haha.

Low grade means there are conformation issues with the fish. Since the strain is unspecified there can never be any grade issued to it but I assure you the definition of "low grade" does not mean it looks more like a fish in its "lineage". A hybrid that looks more like a non hybrid is a mistake that breeders cull out. It's not somebody being a jerk it is someone informing you. Nobody is getting hung up on who's is better. There are ethical issues at play here that maybe you can't comprehend for whatever reason. Buy good quality fh from people who act like they dream about this stuff at night. Cheers

FH breeder near me? Hah. No such thing. Searching "cichlid" on my areas craigslist yields zero results, and zero nearby results. No local clubs either. I actually drove nearly 300 miles round trip yesterday to check out a LFS with rave reviews to arrive and find guppy/platy central and a ton of salty stuff. No such hope for a FH breeder here. If I can pay $2 to get my hands wet with a crappy flowerhorn from a crappy corporate store, I'll do it. Maybe it'll peak my interest enough to order some fancy schmancy selectively bred specimen from someone some day. Until then, no need to wave the holier than thou flag around.
