Did I cheat the system?

Cause you enjoy keeping fish and like that particular fish as you wonder a lfs, plus as you know fh have a great personality and will make most hobbyists very happy. Some people arnt bothered about looks or background, why would people keep plain looking cichlids at all otherwise otherwise, we would all have marine. Each to their own pal, goodluck to all of those "crappy" fh, they escaped the breeders holocaust!-) btw I do like hg fh, I had one imported from Thailand, I added it to my midas community but it got beat up so I had to sell it.
I wouldnt dream of telling someone with a midevil its a piece of crap, with an attitude like that I would have no friends at all, subtlety is the key....

I still can't get over the justification for wanting to own a hybrid that looks identical to one of its pure strain ancestors lol seriously what confused and ridiculous justification could there be for that?
When you have people hybridizing fish, why pay the money for a trimac that you can't say 100% of it's backgrounds? LFS had a few (Trimacs) in stock yesterday, priced at $28 each. No clue on lineage. No chance on me paying $28 on it. I honestly don't care a whole lot for flowerhorns anyways. I seen an opportunity to buy a small one for pocket change to grow out and see what the fuss is about. I don't care if it's the lowest of low grades. I wouldn't pay the money for a high grade anyways.

Hello; Imagine, if you will, the internet being around when people were selectively breeding dogs to develop the many specific breeds. More to the point that an open discussion forum was around. Both the breeders trying to develop pure breeds and those who like mutts would chime in.
Of the various dogs I have had, two were specific breeds, the rest were of the Heinz 57 group. I enjoyed having the mutts pretty much the same as a pure breed. The pure breeds cost more and the mutts just showed up.
Back to the fish. I have bred a few species and faced the point of culling individuals. Some were easy enough to cull as they had gross physical problems.
Others were merely not attractive in the sense of what I was looking for, but healthy enough. If I had unlimited capacity then keeping the culls as pets would be a workable option. Never had that option myself and I was not doing it commercially.
Another thought problem. Over the decades I have seen scads of male bettas for sale in the little cups. The ones seen pretty much had to be those that survived the initial culling and were presentable enough for sale. Because male bettas have to be housed separately, I have come to understand that there simply are not enough places for all these male bettas to be and that most perish. This process has given us the magnificent male bettas we now have with a lot of death involved. I did not breed bettas, but ran into similar issues with kribensis cichlids.
Back to the OP's question. After following the thread, I revise my answer. It seems the fish is a FH of some apparent low quality based on the responses. So the system was not cheated as the price paid was in line with the quality of the fish. Got a FH but paid what its worth? I imagine it can be a fine pet like the various mutts I have had over time.
Good luck

Nothing wrong with keeping mutts, I have, and currently do (dogs), but I didn't start a thread on a public forum asking for opinions on how I "pulled a fast one", or "cheated the system".

I happen to agree with much of what AA has posted, and having kept and raised FH understand why he has posted what he has. You may not like his answer, but it's a fair and honest opinion based on the OP's initial question. And to answer that question, no, you did not cheat the system. You got exactly what you paid for.

Good luck with your new fish.

When the reports for this thread started showing up, I decided that I'd give it a read over. As I was reading the very first post, I couldn't help but get the impression that the OP was a 14 year old boy with maturity issues. No offense intended (and I genuinely mean that, just being honest), bit that is the impression that I got and it rubbed me the wrong way. I'd bet real money that the OP had th same effect on quite a few other posters.

I'll bet that if the OP could be summed up as just "hey, check out this awesome flower horn (maybe?) that I scored for two bucks!) wit no bragging about cheating the system, this would have been an ENTIRELY different thread, full of compliments on the great deal and good score.

As it stands now though, this thread is fairly full of crap and has run its course.

*flush*
