lol! how do you wait for assistance before being swarmed? do you tell the mob, "hey hold up guys, please wait for my backup to arrive before you gang up on me."

Then like I'm saying he put himself in that situation and luckily nothing happened to him. Either learn how to control a situation or stay out of harms way. When a officer is in need other officers aren't to far away (wouldn't have taken long for help to get there).

Well that does make me wonder, why didn't he call for help? Like right when he called them over to stand by the car and started seeing them get all obnoxious? In seattle, cops are EVERYWHERE. It would have take no more then a couple minutes for another officer to get there. Either way, this thread is getting redundant. The cop isn't getting in trouble (thankfully) because he didn't do anything wrong. It doesn't matter if you guys think he wasn't in any danger. It is up to him and what HE is feeling at the time. If he feels in danger, he has the right to do whatever he wants.

No way no how is a police officer empowered to do whatever he wants!!!

There was recently a case here in B.C. where a young person was taken into the rcmp depot in his town for having an open beer at a hockey game. A short while later this young man is laying dead on the floor of the holding cell with a gun shot wound to the back of the head hmmmmm so cops can do whatever they want I THINK NOT.

The people surrounding this officer were not what I would call an angry mob.

Very simply the cop is totally inexperienced with taking down a person as clearly evidenced in how hard it was for him to get the first girl under control.

I agree that pepper spray would be a bad move, but, a good love tap with his baton would solve the issue forthwithly or if he had one the tazer.

Alright you know what I meant. They have the right to use whatever force they want to get the situation under control. The bottom line is he's not getting in trouble, and rightfully so.

Of course the cop is inexperienced. Whom else do you think the station would send on what should have been a cream puff job? No cop with any kind of seniority would want to be posted to what amounts to a 'crossing guard' assignment for a school.

No way they should have sent rambo there with a shark that had lazers on it's head, then watch the crowd be controlled.

Better yet just send robocop out done like dinner :P

All I have to say is it is really easy for people to be arm chair quarterbacks. Until you have been in a similar situation you should not be critizing someone for the way they reacted.

Now for the legal side of it. Once he attempted to take the girl in the black shirt into custody, and the girl in the pink shirt got involved she was guilty of interfereing and subject to arrest. Then she proceeded to push the officer and try to help her friend escape. She was then guilty of assaulting a police officer, and he had the right to use whatever "reasonable" force he deemed necessary to affect the arrest. She not only pushed him but she continued to get in his face and grab at him. The girl in black was actively resisting and disobeying his commands. It was two on one, he felt threatened and acted on that threat. Totally justified IMO.

FYI-Reasonable is defined as what an every day person would deem necessary/appropriate.

Whether the punch was "reasonable" would have to be up to a jury if the girl wants to sue him for it.

are you serious? are you serious? are you serious? That's what happens when you mess with Washington State cops friends.... kind of a weak cop in my opinion. I would have just picked her up and pile drived her into the cement once she started to resist.
omg i can't help but laugh and imagine that!
Personally, I would have gone dual tazer-spray combo, stop her from spouting out sentence fragments.
