So it happened again. I got distracted while refilling the tank and caused another flood. Mived all the fish to the 75 gal while i sort this mess out. Had a friend mve the tank for me so i could remove the carpeting as theres no way i could have done it with my back issues.

Not sure where we stand in the hobby going forward. This is the 2nd time in as many months smh. We're either gonna take a break from the hobby or reduce the stocking further

Very sad to hear that Frank, I know what it feels like to get discouraged but in my experience taking a break from the hobby never helps in a disaster like this and I ended up regretting it, a lot. I would honestly just learn from this and take the precaution to ensure this never happens again.

All in all its your decision I just wanted to give you my two cents.

I hope you can bounce back from this and i wish the best of luck moving forward.

Sorry to hear frank!

Been there, done that! When I use to use a python I overfilled a couple times pretty severely. Not a reason to get out of the hobby in my opinion, but at the end of the day it is just a hobby and you should do whatever you feel like doing.
I now use buckets to fill because there is nowhere to screw a python in near my tanks... largest tank right now is a 90 so not a huge deal. But it's extra insurance that I don't overfill and also a good chest/arms workout

there is enough stress in normal life, if the hobby starts adding to it have a break. Sometimes just emptying your tank for a few months break is enough to re ignite your passion. Just think long and hard before making rash decisions you may regret.

I haven't had any serious floods since I started setting a kitchen timer to remind myself to check water levels. This has worked for me for several years. I just have to remember not to fall asleep or wander out of hearing range. I was thinking a stopwatch hung around my neck would be even better.

Another option would be using a leak detector as a water level alarm.

It just sucks. I know you've been feeling the need to downsize for a while, so this doesn't help. I like the idea that I think duanes mentioned re: the floating auto shut off thing from the feed store.

That being said, I totally agree with this.

Maybe you can just keep the 300, Hulk, and your top favorite polys/cats. One tank with fish that will be hard to get back if you took a break and wanted to get back into it (like Candy).

Again though, you've been tossing around the idea for a bit, at least the downsizing one. I can say that just having one tank for me right now is really kind of nice. (Well I have 2 but one is a 5 gallon shrimp/snail tank that is essentially maintenance free.) I know that my situation is much different and you have much larger setups and fish that have been with you for much longer... but I still completely understand.

The stress of the hobby can't trump the enjoyment.

If you do get out for a bit, I hope you'll still poke in here from time to time. I'd certainly miss you, and I'm certainly not the only one.
