DISCUS TANK "Doing it the MFK way"

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
As always my hat is off to you! :clap:woot: I have always wanted Discus seeing it like this display is amazing! Great job Joey. I know nothing about WC/Domestic but it looks great! I guess you can now start up D.R.E.A.M. Nice!

Hopefully I answered most questions..

Yep, except mine about whether you had a third species of wild :)

That's awesome that you got the Uaru a home. I did the same thing with a datnoid of mine. Even if I never get it back (likely, as I'm also hooked on discus) I know it's in a great home nearby, but if I do want him, I can buy him back. And when I sold my Demasoni from my African tank and immediately regretted it, I just let the guy know to keep me in mind if his plans changed... and after 7 months, last week they did. So I have the fish back that I raised since birth 4 years ago. It's great.

I used that same fake grass for a while (in the datnoid tank, see pic). It looked good at first, but I too got tired of it. Not so much due to it looking unnatural, but because it collected TONS of gunk in there. Good move getting rid of it. Especially now that you're stocking so heavily.

If you set up a new tank, put the albinos in it. An all black albino tank would be pretty cool, then you could still have a huge variety without mixing domestics with wilds, or without getting rid of any of them. Best of all worlds!

Looks really good man. I like that you got rid of the fake looking grass around the bottom of the "tree trunk".

;) Thanks....looking forward to when your tank is complete. Did you pick up the Tig? ... my all time favorite catfish....

I can't wait either...I got the owner to hold the Tig for me until my tank is complete. I don't want to put him in my 50g. The footprint isn't big enough IMO for such a beauty :). They are my all time favorite cat as well...:grinno: I fell honored to be able to have one.

LOL me neither. The guy at the LFS was trying to convince me to stick with 1 species. I couldn't do it. Especially with discus, I would find that impossible. So many colors and varities, and then you got captive bred vs wild caught, all equally stunning. I already want more. The guys at SD say I could easily fit another two in my tank. I'm thinking bigger already :D

Bro, just wait until you get on the wild side. Below is my favorite variant of one of my wild Heckel's...
Nhamunda Blue Moon Heckel

The blues on this one is just amazing.

that's an awesome setup. Can you tell us a bit about how you took those pics? any special lighting ? Congrats on the set up again. Only MFK folks do it that way. :headbang2

Thanks bro. Nothing much on the set up. The only lighting I have is a Jebo 48" light strip that has the dual color bulb 50/50. Normally I have the lights positioned closer to the front, face of the tank. This time I positioned it towards the back. Turn all the lights off in the room and fired away.
Then in post I sharpened it up to mid point and cropped the excess out.

Shot on manual with the following settings;

28-135 Lens
Aperture @ 3.5
ISO @ 1600
Shutter @ 30-40 (somewhere around there)

Oops, my bad.

Yea, so Pandas are in a new home. I got a few Nhamunda Blue Moon Heckels, in addition to the Blue Face Hecks, Emerald Green Japura, The others I'm still trying to identify. I believe they could be
"Jurua" . As for the babies in the tank, it's the fry's from my Orangeheads. They are growing which is awesome. I'm still contemplating on a separate tank for the Albino's or just downsize and keep a few. Saving up for my next big tank.

Good to hear.. my next dream set would be. Group of wild Discus, Altums, pair of Black Rays, Tigrinus, Geo's.

Interesting. So the reddest ones in there are just the original emerald greens then?

How old were your babies before you netted them out? My pair has conquered an entire half of my tank protecting their brood. But I'm afraid to take them from their parents just yet.

What dream tank dimensions are you saving up for?

I have pretty much the same combo except my tank footprint (once set up) means I can only do Hystrix. Which is fine... I don't need the giant ones to be happy.
