I agree but also disagree....if there can be any proof provided that blood parrots are not hybrid but rather a mutated form of A. labiatus (as claimed) then it would actually belong here and not the hybrid forum. I personally don't believe that but by creating this thread I'm giving 'them' a chance to prove their statements.

You should prove your statement. So you can prove they are hybrids and what they were bred from right? What are you trying to prove if you dont even know haahaaahah

Why do some always try to put segregation into fish keeping? because this thread is over a Parrot CICHLID show his fins in a "fin" thread..

I was only sharing my fish with the group for joy man. that's all..

One question - has anybody been able to personally repeat the hybridization process to create BPs?

If only the blood parrot genome project wasnt such a low priority for the world's geneticists!

You never know It's an interesting evolutionary biology topic and somebody may just write up a proposal to do comparative genomics in cichlids

This thread has nothing to do with you. Someone posted in the other thread 'claiming' that they know for a fact that they are not hybrids. That turned into a separate discussion that was derailing the thread. There were several members contributing to the discussion so I decided to create this thread to allow the discussion to continue without derailing the other thread any more.

The belief that BP's are hybrids has been a commonly accepted belief for many years now. The fact that 95% of males are sterile. The fact that they can't breed true (can't breed at all in fact most of the time due to the infertility of males...so in order to breed at all a female has to be crossed with a male of another species). The fact that one has never been collected from the wild. These all lend credence to the belief that they are hybrid. So, with this commonly accepted belief, why would I need to further prove anything?

It is when one person disagrees with the commonly held belief that the masses will ask that that individual prove his case. If this can be done then by all means I'm willing to open my mind to the possibilities.

I don't think you will see it just like I don't think you will see a homegrown glowfish either. Not many have the test tubes and DNA splicing skills to make either type of fish at home.

There are parrot farms in the US and and its seems some have stopped culling the parrots that have synspilum traits, you can find these in some stores like Petsmart where they sell the younger ones.

Good read, Chrisplosion. I like the fact that the author explains in detail the science and process of creating BP. I would say that this proves that they are hybrids (as I believe anyway) but then someone else will come along and post another article saying the complete opposite.

If a BP is simply a line bred, deformed red devil, it's OK to discuss it on this forum...and it's an acceptable fish for "serious hobbyists" to keep a la the EBJD.

If a BP is a hybrid of a red devil and other fish, it's NOT OK to discuss it on this forum...and it's NOT an acceptable fish for "serious hobbyists" to keep.

If no one knows, we'll all just speculate.

Your statement is the exact reason why this thread exist. Some believe that BP and FH are legitiamte CA/SA species that should be included on this forum, while others believe they do not. I don't see how they can be anything but hybrids. It seems that there is an abundance of evidence to prove that. But I also think that it is always good to listen to other people and get their take on matters. I wouldn't say that this is an absurd thread. Everyone is here to educate and discuss the hobby. I think that this thread is in line with that.
