Ok thank you and are they compatible with Congo tetras and guppies or are there any other things you could suggest

def possible they will eat guppies but they also reproduce like crazy. So it might work

Ok well I've already said at the moment I'm trying to keep costs low and I like the diy aspect of things so even though a tank would be nicer to see them I think I'm still going with this option

Your proposed stock list with bichirs and dithers will not keep costs low. Heavy stocking leads to more spending in order to keep the fish with optimal water parameters.

I know it's going to be dirt cheap obviously but using that tub instead of a tank can save 200 diy sump instead of a proper one could save another 50 so saving 250 is quite good in my eyes
