This all makes sense and thanks for the help everyone. I am going to do the second bucket that makes perfect since. I still think the lid might leak any thoughts on that other than tighten and use vasolene on the O ring?

Also would a smaller hose from the intake to the canister limit the amount of siphon pressure?

No that wouldn't effect anything regardless of the size or length of tube it is still the same pressure. I am a machinist so I would make my own clamps to hold the lid tight around the diameter of the lid I get material for free tho and do it on my own time.
