DIY canister filters

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo

You may be right. May be mine is not a true canister filter but it's not a sump in bucket. In sump, you have compartments whereas mine don't have any. And the pump resting on the bottom, continuously sucking the water, forcing the water pass through the media. This creats pressurized ckeancle. So may be mine is part canister.
Anyway, thanks for the info. About joeyJo canister filter, may be it's hard to run.

Thanka

Have you thought about building a overhead sump filter? Highly effective and efficient and super easy to build.

Well yes....before building that canister filter, I gave thought to overhead sump. But I have no place to put the sump overhead. Otherwise it's super easy compare to canister.

I did build a large canister filter but it also took a lot more materials than what was showed in the vid ... it had both lava rock and the 2in thick filter mat in it ... about 50pounds of rock and 12 inches of mat and worked great and greatly extended the lifespan before cleaning but then would take a few hours to clean but that was for a small indoor pond of large turtles (about 2000 gallons) and used a 2750 gallon sump pump it worked to keep the water totally clear and after the roc had grown the good bacteria the nitrites and nitrates were reduced to a very safe level ...would I ever suggest someone to do this id say no way tho was tons of trial and error and took a lot more money than just buying several larger filters .... Do you have pics or video? Was it an actual canister or a sump in a bucket shape? Dying to know if this has worked for anyone long term for real like in Joeys video.

I saw these buckets one time and thought they would make an incredible diy can if they were sturdy enough. I had a design sketched up for one but I ultimately never bought one so im not sure how well the seal would hold under pressure. They look pretty sturdy though. It would be a monster canister too.

I tried a bucket similar to that, but the lock was on the lid. The gamma seal lids held the best but still failed.

Try HW-3000, it has flow control and UV control, i have one running for few months and works great.
