spot on exapmle you cant put all fish in to one catagory. i normally feed every other day sometimes more sometimes less. i reguly leave my fish for upto two weeks if i fancy going away for a break. ive only lost one fish from doing this. many say that long periods without feeding is good for the digestive system and i agree. i realise many of the posters here try very hard to fatten fish and get them as large as possible but i see no advantage to doing this. my fish are kept svelt-like at all times and show great health

i dont feed everyday to get them to gro

i figure if i can be full every day

then so should they :)

i feed 1-2x daily
if i am not home they fast longest fast was 1 week they were mad but fine

if there is a large size difference in tankmates i make arrangements to feed everday
lost an aro in 1 1/2days

Daily food is good for Fish. I always feed my fish 2 times daily because It is good for their health. Only one day in a week is fasting for fish because my friends tell me that It is good for fishes.

they dont have to eat everyday when adults. especially preds. in the wild, they dont get to eat every day.

Very true they don't have to be fed everyday. In my case I feed mine everyday to avoid my preditors eating each other. If my beasts aren't fed well they tend to be more aggressive tword each other. More aggression means smaller preds hiding and a lot of water on the floor.

I'm voting no but in my case I feed everyday....

WTF? Who's the 17% retards?

The question is:

Do fish NEED to eat EVERY day?

Yes it is better that juvenile fish eat daily (or more often), but they don't need it.

For cripes sake gang, the most obese F-wads on Earth (We Americans) do not even NEED to eat daily.

The only correct answer to the question as it is worded is plain and simple:
NO!

Apparently you never owned cardinal tetras or truely carnivorous predetory baby fish. Some fish do NEED to eat daily to survive. Most though do not.

And for my baby to get the proper development it needs yes I do NEED to eat everyday. ( P.S- I'm not an obese F-wad)

;).. so the answer technically is Yes....

You forget.. there are always exceptions... Always.

Well, I don't need to eat a package of cookies in one sitting, but i've been known to do so. I try and practice restraint when feeding my fish. I feed twice a day in small portions. I try to throw in the odd half day fast one day a week.

I think that's a good rule of thumb.

1. Feed growing fish multiple times a day.
2. Feed fish you wish to breed multiple times a day.
2. Practice a certain amount of restraint with full grown or approaching fully grown adult fish. I.e., a certain number of fasting days per month or single feed days per week.

Since we don't "need" to eat every day, neither do fish. In fact occassional "fasting" is good for them and your tank.
