my guppies had 4 fry a few days ago and then yesterday all of the fry disappeared. did the guppies eat them or is it possible that my african cichlids did? i feed both plenty of food and their is a zucchini tied to a rock at the bottom of the tank so it just doesn't make sence that the africans would eat them. their are still more fry popping up today so it might be the old fry, or it might be new. i do not know.

They probably both ate them.

In my experience guppys will often eat some of their fry. but some usually survive to over-populate the tank

Any cichlid however will totally exterminate them :WHOA: Doesn't matter how well you feed them, if a baby guppy swims past they wont be able to resist :grinno:
I have a kribensis in my guppy tank, just as population control, works well. If I ever want more guppys I can just take it out for a few weeks and have hundreds of fry :nilly:

Cheers

Ian

Why do you keep guppies with africans? :screwy:

As all fish know, guppy fry are just irisistable, even to thier mother. I used to love being woke up in the morning by the loud popping of my angels eating the fry. But then the angels ate the guppes.

a bucket is a worst thing you can keep fish in...unless you're planning to eat it.
and non-filtered?? wow that's a minus.
you'll need aeration too

how about a gold fish aquarium then?

A lfs in my city specializes in breeding fancy guppies....I go to the back and see lined up, maybe 2 dozen 5-10 gallon old school steel braced tanks....Each tank is thickly planted...All tanks have been this way since the early 70's...He has won many awards...dah,dah,dah----dah,dah,dah....Things is, each tank probably contains anywhere between one to three pairs of these feeders, I mean fancy guppies....And with this formula in mind, your imagination is right.....Each tank also holds about 10-30 fry, some more....Some are bought, some I guess eaten....But every time I visit, probably once a month, it is pretty much the same fish in each tank....So, yes, you can raise fry in small enclosures without big fry loss...There are several well planted 2g "goldfish bowls" that may have up to 10-20 guppy fry with their parents swimming in it....With his fancy moss and bunched plants, all these tanks are highly oxygenated ....Some tanks, the filter is left out...Only air stones are used...
