do guppies eat their fry?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
At the minimum, I'd use a 20 or 30 gal long to breed guppies. If you use anything less, it will be over populated with one birth! :screwy: Keep the tank between 76-80 and you'll be fine. This same tactic works for mollies, platys, and swordtails too. :headbang2I bred all of the above before, along with convict cichlids (they'll breed in a puddle, as long as the temp is around 79 or 80), angelfish, bettas, cory cats (inadvertently), and saltwater cleaner shrimp.:D

i love all these easy to breed fish! just add water and instant feeders!

Plants are better, 1/2 fill the tank with Java moss or similar, real or artifical.
You wont need 100 guppys, each female can drop 50-100 (or even more) - every month.
Get about 1 male for every 3 females.
The problem isn't getting enough fry, it's having the space to rear the fry you do get to a decent feeder size.

Cheers

P.S. They really ARE easy to breed. ;)

I was about to argue with pangasiusfan, but then I realized he had been banned :).

The most efficient guppy set-up I have seen is a 20gL with 2 dividers and pairs put into the sections, 5g buckets for each drop, then seperated into 2 seperate tanks (by sex) for growout (the tanks were packed 55g). It was a bit absurd to watch, but he also kept several large RES turtles, so he always had food.

so im gonna get some fancy guppies to breed..... how to u tell the diffrence between the males n females at the store

yeah the parents will eat the fry. Try using java moss if wanting to breed them and then use a tank divider. Guppies will still have more fry b/c they store the sperm for later use so they dont need the male.
