I see a lot of people turning incredible turnover rates on here and I started questioning my set up. Currently on my 90 gallon I run a Marineland Penguin 350 and a Fluval 205. I am moving 530 gph right now turning the tank over almost 6 times an hour. Is this going to be enough when my fish get fully grown? I don't plan to modify the current stocklist unless something really good comes along. Any suggestions as to whether it will be necessary to upgrade or add another canister filter later.:(

your lookin at a lot of waste but i think every 10 minutes 90 gallons gets turned over, thats pretty good. some people have over filtration on here when you don't need it you should be fine but in the future if you have problems the i guess you would have to add another filter.

I have the top 2 levels packed with bio rings and some extra on top of that, and a water polishing pad in the top level. I really like the fluval flexabilty to be able to have 5 different stages/options to choose from and go with what you like. I.M.O. they have the most total effective filtration area.

IMO you will be lacking in bio filtration. Magnum are not very good biofilters, but you can fill the media container of the magnum with bio max, this will help. Your fluval 205 is only rated for a 40 gallon tank. I would look into upgrading one of the two filters you have now.

agreed you should be okay... just test nitrates and if you see em spiking maybe add another filter or upgrade

:screwy: How would spiking nitrates justify a filter upgrade? Most would just do regular water changes to keep nitrate levels under control.

Nitrates don't spike, the consistently climb. Ammonia and nitrite are the ones that spike, and are signs of insufficient filtration.

you can never over-filter.
i have 20 eheims pro 3 on a single tank.lol
Not true, you can easily over filter a tank, in both turnover, and wasted media. So long as there is enough surface area for all of your bacteria, you have sufficient filtration.
