Do I have have enough filtration?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
thanks wyldfya I figured it would help house some more bb since there probably is very little actually sticking to the bio wheel.

I am planning on doing at least 20% wc for now. As they get bigger I will adjust.

;) Your W/C - Maintainance schedule should be based on your nitrate test readings & the sensitivity of the fish you're trying to keep. Some circles tout 40ppm as acceptable. I personally strive for 20ppm or less. Some sensitive fish might require 10ppm to thrive. Test your water frequently early on & you'll be able to determine just how much & how often maintainance should be done to maintain your ideal target nitrate level. "T"

Ok, all just did a water check.
Ammonia-.5
Nitrite-15 ppm
Ph-6.8

Is my Nitrite levels to high should I be doing 25% W/C's weekly? Any suggestions would be great.

Are you sure your nitrIte levels are that high? Most tests don't go that high for nitrite. If it is nitrate, then you are in good shape.

It says NH4 is that nitrate?

What type test are you using? Nitrate is NO3- Nitrite is NO2- and ammonia is NH3 or NH4+

tell the truth I dont know the kit...i was given these 3 bottles and a full chart and told how to use them, they arere for nitrate ammonia and ph.

Is it enough filtration? Depends on the question. The question is, is it enough filtration to:
a) house enough BB to keep the ammonia and nitrites under control
b) catch all the poop and suck it out of sight
c) grant you bragging rights

How you answer the question is up to you. I have a single 205 on a 55 gallon planted tank and never have any worries over ammonia or nitrites. Conversely, I have two FX5s and a sump on a 125. Neither is over filtered, because I want "a" and "b" and not "c". If I want to drop $4700 on 20 eheims, I could claim "c", but that's not my style.

I'm guessing you want "a" and "b" as well. I think you will want to upgrade the 205 to a 305 or 405 in the future to catch more poop, but you will be fine with BB without an upgrade.
