Do I have have enough filtration?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Don't listen to people that say you need super huge filtration on any tank you have. It all depends on stocking levels. I have a 55 gallon-with around 15 guppies- that I only turn over 1 time every two hours with a sponge filter. On this tank all water params are perfect with a 20% weekly wc. On the other hand, I have a 60 gallon with an oscar that I filter 9 times per hour. It all depends on stocking levels. With the fish in you sig, you have more than enough filtration. Keep up on wc's and test water params every once in a while to make sure you are doing enough wc's.

I am planning on doing at least 20% wc for now. As they get bigger I will adjust.

As an afterthought I had a bunch of fluval bio rings leftover from the extra's I bought and dumped them into the extra media "tray" slot on the penguin 350 for some extra bb housing. This seem like a good idea or just a waste of bio media?

I see a lot of people turning incredible turnover rates on here and I started questioning my set up. Currently on my 90 gallon I run a Marineland Penguin 350 and a Fluval 205. I am moving 530 gph right now turning the tank over almost 6 times an hour. Is this going to be enough when my fish get fully grown? I don't plan to modify the current stocklist unless something really good comes along. Any suggestions as to whether it will be necessary to upgrade or add another canister filter later.:(

O.K. filtration....I would add an Aqua Clear 101 for mechanical sweeps....

i see, i see.

but don't worry all my bio media in the 20 eheim pro's would be colonized.
once the tank is cycled, it would be pretty packed with alot of waste producing monsters. and maybe a fly river turtle
Unless your 12' tank is very large on the other dimensions, then your wasting a ton of money of filters. The 2080 can handle quite large tanks, and adding multiples doesn't increase the effectiveness, it's just redundant. Adding other filters that are strong in the pro 3's weak areas is far smarter, and cheaper. I'd say for your 12' tank you could have gotten by with 4-6 2080s.

Your fluval 205 is only rated for a 40 gallon tank. I would look into upgrading one of the two filters you have now.

What...? its rated for 100 Gallons.... :screwy:

Yes it is rated for 40 gallons and flows 180 gph, and I have the marineland penguin bio wheel 350 rated for 350 gph (i wonder how they came up with that figure lol). No one answered my extra bio media question though.

The extra bio-media in the chamber will add surface area, increasing the effectiveness of the HOB filter.
