Do I have have enough filtration?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
oh; but not cleanliness wise right?
i can see that it would blow the fish away if you were to get a XP3 on a half gallon tank. but the water qualoty would be top notch wouldn't it?

IMO you will be lacking in bio filtration. Magnum are not very good biofilters, but you can fill the media container of the magnum with bio max, this will help. Your fluval 205 is only rated for a 40 gallon tank. I would look into upgrading one of the two filters you have now.

Look at his sig and you will realize he only has five tiny fish in that tank. No upgrade is necessary IMO.

The water would be top notch with an XP3 or a Whisper 10. The bacteria colony, given enough space, will grow only to the size at which the ammonia produced in the tank can maintain. Beyond that, you will have bio-media that is empty, and just taking up space. Which way did you waste more money?

You could remove the glass canopy and suspend your light fixture about 6" from the top of the tank. Then add two AC110's on the back of the tank and two more AC110's; one on each side. The four AC110's will give you 2,000GPH (>20x turnover). It won't help the nitrate problem and your fish will have to keep swimming against the current 24 hrs a day; but you will have bragging rights for the most AC110's on one tank.

I misread your OP you have a Penguin 350 biowheel, right? This puts you in a little better sitsuation for now but once you cichlids are full grown they will produce alot of waste. There will also be alot of small uneaten food particles that will also contribute to the levels of waste. I would look into upgrading your canister filter. When you do this you will be able to move the media from the 205 into the new canister and add much more biomedia along with it.

He is not asking about filtration for "five tiny fish" as you put it. He is asking for when they are full grown.

Yes they are small now but hopefully one day they will be MONSTERS!!!:)

Yea if and when I do upgrade I will be moving all the bio media from the fluval to a newer bigger canister and the 205 will get new bio media. As for the bio wheel 350 I am planning on keeping it with the tank it does a good job of moving water around. Not one single inch of the surface of my tank has an undisturbed spot where water is not aggregating.

i see, i see.

but don't worry all my bio media in the 20 eheim pro's would be colonized.
once the tank is cycled, it would be pretty packed with alot of waste producing monsters. and maybe a fly river turtle

Right now your turnover rate is actually 5. (350+110)/90, which is good enough in the range for freshwater. If you want to upgrade filteration you should upgrade you tank as well. But even with a bigger tank with 5 turnover rate is good enough.

I personally think those five fish can live in your 90g for life. Three of them max at 12" and two of them at 6", while the current tank has enough width for them.

Yea that is why I got the tank. I knew what fish I wanted already in my head and came up with a good buy on the tank. Actually the flow rate on the 90 is 180 gph. Hopefully they will be true monsters one day. I'd really like to get a bigger tank though one day. A 210 would be nice with a black aro, peacock bass, jag, 1 more firemouth, and 2 dracula pleco's. I'd probally put 3 fluval 405's on there or 3 of the big eheim pro's...:headbang2:headbang2:headbang2:headbang2:headbang2
