Do I have to move to socal?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have the same problem too, I am in Georgia. Every now and then I will find a larger sized tank like a 200. Right now, I am in a debate over a slightly cracked top 300 gallon acrylic with an easy fix, a 250 gallon glass, or one I have to drive over 2 states to, that is 350 acrylic and very expensive. I see a problem with the 300 cracked that is local, if I ever have to resell it, the price would go down because of the crack.

I hear you! Nothing's even been posted for sale on MFK at all for the Lower Mid Atlantic region (fish, tanks, equipment...nothing!) since July. The last tank was in May and that was a 40 gallon.

As far as Craigslist and the like, a BIG tank is a 30g and a HUGE, "Bigger than you'll ever fill!" tank is a 90g. I kid you not.

Perhaps the people in your area just buy big tanks for their rays and gars and tend not to upgrade as much as people on the west coast. I don't foresee Madding getting a new tank any time soon, but here's hoping he gets a 800gal :) for that beautiful golden gar.

Hey this goes out to all you socal guys, if you road trip past the mississippi with your tank you could get three times as much.
Maybe I should set myself up as a used tank dealer. I could get a truck load of tanks from out there and sell them here. Who wants to help?

Ugh, so not fair Cali has those massive tanks for so little...I agree, someone should go pick them all up that we pay for.

lol.. Going to agree with all the NY's & NJ's with nothing ever being posted...

Then again, They have it lucky, compared to the East East..
New Brunswick Canada... .. anything bigger the 500, is a store or government owned.. lol

Big tanks here are .. 30-90
MASSIVE TANKS here are 110-130's (and your looking at 1-2K)

.. I was lucky when I got my 125, a stand, and XP3 filter for $200.00 (the guy moved up here from socal.... )

i just want to point out the we may have bigger tanks. but you guys have it way better than us. we aren't allowed to have any cool fish like sting rays, etc. so i guess it evens out if you think about it.

ya all also have to remember that Southern California (the southern half of our state) is the same size as ALL of new england.. and people here are always on the move. no one stays anywhere for more than a few years. if someone lives in a house for 10 years it's very uncommon, and the folks that live in their home till it's paid off are almost unheard of.

it's also very common for folks here in socal to get rid of all of their animals every time they move and then adopt new ones when they get where they are going. this is why there are so many dogs in shelters and why there are so many aquariums for sale, or at least part of the reason.

being a native Californian this tendency to just throw away everything that you work for and care about when they become inconvenient is very disturbing to me.

we have become a disposable society, our landfills are filling up faster and faster every year because of folks and their germ phobias (which are fed by the media and the paper product companies). god forbid you might get a little bit of dirt on your hands and have to use a CLOTH towel to dry your hands after you wash them. or wipe up a spill with a kitchen towel and actually WASH it. and don't even get me started on disposable diapers.. lol.

Guess I got lucky finding a 180 gallon for 200 only a half hour away from me in Delaware. I am only like 15-20 minutes from the Delaware bridge, 30 from Philly, and 2 hours from NYC, and 40 minute from Atlantic and Ocean City. Pretty sweet location.
