People look at me crazy when I say I have a 90 gallon in my living room, then when I tell them I have a 240 gallon they say I'm nuts and you don't even want to know what they say when I tell them I am building an indoor pond for my catfish this Spring and that I have 17 horses! All that I can say it that I love my catfish and my horses!
Here in Arizona, we have a similar situations, as Shyanne mentions about the tanks in Oklahoma.
One of the main points I see on the East Coast is people there who have monster tanks for sale (100+ gal.), do not understand that like vehicles, their monster tanks or tanks in general and the accessories, depreciate in value. They feel their tanks and accessories are still worth the value of a Lamborgini or Ferrari, when actually it's resale value is not much more than a AMC Pacer, Chevy Vega or a Ford Pinto. If you guys pay more than 80 cents to a buck a gallon for resale cost on a used tank with accessories, your nuts.
Some people in Phoenix and Flagstaff, Arizona are the same way. They think their tanks don't depreciate in value. Sad news for them folks. They're Crazy Demented Craiglister's. Usually you'll find a good deal in those 2 cities, and sometimes in some of the not so big towns, but once in a while, you'll find one that's sarcastically insulting.
I have a 110 gallon in my living room, still working on getting it ready for the day I get up and running, but it's a work in progress. I'd buy some more monster tanks, if I had the room, but right now that's just not possible. I enjoy looking for tanks on Craigs Listings. If I had the money and more room, I'd go to Phoenix (a 9 to 10 hr. round trip) and pick up several tanks in one day. Purchasing coordination on a trip like this would be paramont, as I'd have to drive from one location to the next, which is not an easy task for me as it involves 5 or 6 incorporated towns into a rather huge metropolis. And living in a small town roughly 250 miles northeast of Phoenix, driving in an unfamiliar city, coordinating time and directions and hope to make a big score, isn't the easiest to do. It's just not possible to do sometimes. And yes, people in St. John, Arizona look at me like I'm insane, when I mention I want to get more tanks, especially monster sized ones at that.
All I can really advise you members on the east coast is to keep trying, and hopefully you'll have better luck as your infinite search for the monster tanks you desire, will show up. Remember though $.80 per gallon. Maybe a full buck tops, but no more. If you do, do so at your own discression. Condition and cleanliness are real important in a used purchase. GL on your quest for the best monster tank sale you can find.
