Do these look fertile?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Females generally aren’t. Almost all males are infertile, but there have to be a few so we can keep getting parrots. I think I must have lucked out with one of those few fertile males. Unless the jack is the real father and the parrot is just their stepfather. Time will tell. I probably won’t be able to see who the father is for about a month or two after they hatch.

wait so is the convict the male?

Nope, con is the female. She has the shorter fins and orange patch on her sides. Also no evidence of a nuchal hump.

did you see him fertilizing the eggs?
No, just found them being guarded by the convict. I’m only guessing it’s the parrot because it’s tube was dropped and from how it behaves with the convict.

Day 3:
Eggs still tan, should hatch tomorrow or Sunday if I’m correct.
Parrot now starting to tend to the nest with the female, Convict seems to be doing more patrolling.
My theory is that the con was already an experienced breeder when I got her, so she already knows what to do and expects the parrot to as well.
They still fight a bit, doesn’t seem as bad though.

Well... they ate the eggs.
Or at least they aren’t where I left them. ?
Better luck next time I suppose.

As I wait for the next batch, the parrot and convict have been exhibiting more pair like behaviors, swimming somewhat near each other, defending/attacking with each other, etc.
Both even have the guts to fight with the leporinus now.

They’ve both really started digging. Parrot is actively engaged in nesting behavior. From what I know about convict breeding, I may see eggs again in 1-2 weeks.
Would it be better to take the eggs out whenever they do get laid and try it myself, or just let them parent on their own and net out fry later?
