Its hard for you to understand because you more than likely never have and never will have those words thrown at you. And getting frustrated at transpeople because they've been told they shouldn't say something hurtful is entirely immature.

And I cant grasp why simple politeness seems to be such a hard concept to grasp. How limited would you be in life if you couldn't use ONE word. And its not one person, its an entire community

I am just a simple minded old Georgia redneck. I tend to like everyone and would rather laugh than fight. I go out of my way to attempt to live my life by two simple principles; the Golden Rule and the Unforgivable Crime.

We all know what the Golden Rule is: treat others as you wish to be treated. Many of you are probably not familiar with the Unforgivable Crime; it's soft hitting. The basic concept for someone who lives by these two principles is to give everyone the benefit of the doubt, help everyone you can, always speak a kind word and always have an open mind. Do everything you can to avoid an unnecessary conflict. Educate, don't antagonize. Do not hit at all if it can possibly be avoided. However, if the situation arises that you can't avoid conflict, never hit softly. A soft strike lacks any authority to truly deliver a lesson and a hard strike is all the more shocking coming on the heels of a logical, calm attempt at defusing the situation and will be far more effective.

With this in mind, I respectfully offer that the manner in which you have presented your argument is doomed to fail because you're not presenting it in accordance with these two simple principles. Turn the situation around; how would YOU like it if someone came along and was vehemently disparaging you for something, seemingly out of the blue, for something that you didn't know was 'wrong?' How would you like it if the delivery of said rant was presented in such a manner that it seemed to implicate your entire group as part of what did whatever offended the person? And all of this over something so simple as a WORD?

You won't get far in your quest for acceptance this way. You'll turn people who are amicable to your cause and indeed who even supported it away by unwittingly indicting them as conspirators for crimes of the past. Your strikes are neither hard and I sincerely doubt you'd like to be patronized this way.

Think about how you present yourself. That's all I ask. I'd hate to see your group lose it's momentum by alienating the majority whose support you so desperately need to make your goals happen.

it's hard for me to grasp because when i use that word, i'm not trying to be impolite.

and I don't buy that it's an entire community. i don't know the entire community to make a call

And most straight folk of either gender will never understand why you all are so upset about it.

I am of the mind set that if people want to get passed the past, they need to let go of it and move on. People who have been victimized in the past who insist on maintaining their raw, open wounds instead of letting them heal do nothing but hurt their cause. I see a lot of people in this thread who are growing increasingly frustrated with transsexual folks thanks to this conversation.

The majority is the greatest ally of any minority group who wishes to be accepted. By alienating members of the majority who may be amicable to your cause by 'reminding' them of transgressions committed by people who look like them in the past, you'll never gain their support and acceptance and all of us as a community will never move on.

I "buycott" this!

I guess its just not understood how triggering that word specifically could be. And honestly, I've BEEN in the exact situation you described. Im from NW SC (Greenville area), and I'm now in Miami. There are a ton of cultures and taboos I don't understand. With that in mind, I just try and learn as quickly as possible. I do however, understand when someone freaks out. In Southeast Asian culture, when sitting, you don't sit with the soles of your feet facing people. For a class I had to visit a Thai Buddhist temple, and in a meditation class I did that. The monk freaked, but I corrected myself and apologized. No ill feelings remained. If youre uneducated and say that word I understand, but if someone asks for you to not say it, you should be compassionate and understand. If any of you have said that word out of ignorance I understand, but now that you know better, its now your responsibility to keep that in mind. While yes, the majority is important to causes, they need to understand what the minority has been through, and what the minority still goes through.

The problem is that many of us in the majority absolutely can not truly understand. We try. We try to be supportive. Many of us support your goals. However, we don't, and never will have, the life experiences necessary to truly understand where you're coming from. The attempts to make us understand are futile for the reasons listed previously.

The vehemence with which you have presented your arguments is counterproductive, I promise you. I can get that you all want acceptance. I respect that. Most people in this thread get that and can respect that. Instead of arguing over this, the best course of action would, honestly, be to drop it and treat the people who just don't get it with respect. If you speak your piece calmly and respectfully and give them time to digest it, I can guarantee the flavor will be much more palatable to your audience over time.

You won't make this change happen, like, NOW. I know that's frustrating.

:)

There is no privliges. Period. Its a joke to think there is.

Ok do you read any of the studies done or do you just go based off your personal experiences? Because the civil rights movement which was in the 1960's didn't have anything to fight about? If you actually looked at scientifically researched analysis of this subject you would see white males are inherently privileged. Maybe not everyone is discriminatory at all towards white male, but it's a joke to say no one is ever discriminated against for being a minority. Which is essentially what you're saying since you said it's a joke that white men have more privileges. You have no evidence to back you up because there is no evidence to back you up. Racism and discriminatory practices exist, and because they do white males do tend to have more privileges, and if you deny that, then that's the joke my friend.

Are you a transgender person asking me not to say it? Or just someone who thinks they can speak for a group they are not a part of?

We are not talking 1960s. Welcome to 2013 almost 2014. If anything its actually a DISADVANTAGE to be a white male because of anti discrimination laws. My previous statement stands. Its a joke to think being a white male in todays society is some how a privilege

Wow so you really think there are no racist people in the world, and that there are no racist people in power. Because if those statements are true, yes being a white male is privileged.
