i'm actually going to build a pond and a 10'x5'x3' tank...in addition to my 3 tanks now...i thought about turning my 20gal into a feeder tank then i had an idea for a small fish tank with rams dwarf gouramis and small eels...

I already did back in the 90's(early 95). In my peak, I had 26 tanks in my house with over 300 fish. I worked 10 hours a day 7 days a week... I was in the process of going back to school to change my career. I was spending almost 4 hours a day tending to the tanks. This was too much for me, 2 years later I was under 17 tanks.

Around 2002 I was down to 2 tanks(190 and 125) but hated the silence in my bedroom so I started my 80 gallon back up. In late 2003 the 190 gallon leaked... it was shut down. In Mid 2005 the wife came and made my shut the 80 gallon back down but allowed me to start up a 20 gallon long in the dining room.

Late last year when we moved, she would not allow the 125 to follow, I swapped it with a 55 gallon... also no room for the 20. So I'm down to one.... but she is ok with the idea of a pond outside

Why don't you take your balls back from your wife and get some monsters?

i think aquaria is a hobby and not a lifestyle. i like my fish and i enjoy the hobby but i refuse to allow it to dictate my day-to-day activities. i can't imagine having more than 2 tanks at a time. i'm appreciative of anyone who has 10 or more tanks or anyone who has a monster tank of 500 + gallons. i just can't imagine it. i don't have the time to dedicate to the maintenance of that many tanks or a monster tank. so, the answer to the original question, for me is that i have not allowed myself to become so consumed by the hobby so much that i have to cutback. i still have some room for growth. please don't think i'm bashing or being critical of anyone who has a monster tank or 10 + tanks. i just can't imagine having to not take vacations because i'm afraid to leave my fish alone. i have actually seen posts from people who don't take vacations because they are afraid to leave their fish alone or under the supervision of a person who is not a hobbyist.

I've added a couple smaller tanks, and I'm upgrading my office tank from a 3G to a 12G . . . I'm not going to cut back until I have to, and right now, don't have to (knock-on-wood)

thats extreme.

one of the great things about aquariums is that you CAN leave them easily, whereas with a dog/cat etc. you need a sitter to come and let them out etc.

fish are much easier to leave alone for periods of time.

you'd be surprised. I had 8 tanks at my parents, I now have 2 at my house (but one is big)

its not much different.

you might spend a fraction more time per week doing some water changes, but is really not a big deal.

the variety you get to have with different stuff in different tanks is well worth it.

I am always wishing I could have more tanks (eg. I would love a 120g reef tank, giant gourami tank, etc)

its part of the fun of the hobby.
