Interesting. I've met other hobbyist who were really attached to their fish. You can tell when they're having a hard time handing over the fish. As for me, I'm Asian and growing up... Fish is food, so as close as of an attachment I have to them is that I enjoy watching them and caring for them.
It all depends on the type of fish. Ive had hundreds of community fish. Never did i feel any attachment. My peacock bass were another story. They all develope their own personality. Tho i would have to say, RTC's are the hardest not to get attached to.

I think it depends on the keeper themselves. To put in the hard work of water changes, feeding, cleaning tanks, setting up tanks, trying to build communities with fish that you don't know will work and etc... after all that and you can find a fish that you love and when that time comes or something bad happens to that fish.... its going to be hard not to be attached. Especially one that you've had for a long time where you grew them out and watched them grow over the years... I've had my moments of depression when losing a valuable fish. But I have yet to cry... but I can't say I won't one day.
I am very attached to my 2" fahaka and 8" FL gar
I went from lent pike, dwarf puffers, eels, bichirs, cichlids, tetras, rainbows, community fish, wen i had to give minion my fahaka away and now to my dream fish FL gar right wen I got the chance and to another fahaka so I know I will never trade them in for anything In the whole wide world so yes I'm very very attached even to minion I ask the guy for update pics here he is
I get pissed when something dies, but i dont give it too much thought. If my dovii died i would be sad, as with my l200 or adonis. Nothing else really. Ive had a few africans die from aggression, and couldnt finds a new home for my female black belt so she became a feeder.
I am attached to a lot of the fish I have. I have a female loisellei cichlid that I have had since she was 2" and now 7" and 3 yrs old that I built a 75 gallon tank around for her she is mellow and comes up for food when I am saucing her she even takes food out of my hand if she died It would hurt like hell but I don't think I would cry
Depends on the fish. I wont cry over my dither fish or little community fish (though it does upset me), but I cried for days over my archerfish I lost a few years back. Grew him up from about 4cm to almost 25cm and when I found him dead one morning I was completely inconsolable for hours. Took me two YEARS to buy another one. The one I have now is about 10cm and an absolute joy, so I'm already attached.
Cry never. Im very sad and sometimes angry but dont think i can cry for a fish. I recently lost the paratilapia polleni that was in my avatar 3 years old grew from2" but still didnt cry. I get more angry than anything.
