do you have sympathy for feeder gold fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I feed feeder fish once in awhile but not often, I don't feel any remorse for the feeders , if our fish was still in the wild what would they eat ? they would eat fish , bugs whatever else they stumble across

do you have sympathy for the cow when your hamburger is being served to you?

I feel no sympathy either. Its what they were bred for. I rarely feed live food though.

I don't think this is a valid argument. Rats and mice are bred to be snake food, and many people have no problem with that. What if kittens were bred for the same purpose?
People would go nuts

Personally I have no problem with feeding live fish. Not because they are bred to be food though.

nope...no sympathy...i feed them to my fish frequently.

That is hot! :naughty:

No sympathy either, its just like the rats I feed my snakes. That's what they're breed for, plus its nature. Big fish eats little fish :]

I don't have sympathy for them as being feeders in and of themselves, thats what they are bred for. I don't look at it any different then the steak I cook for dinner. But I do have sympathy for the conditions they are often kept in.

Thats the way I would explain it.

I understand big fish eat little fish. I also have kept goldfish before and I like the fact that they are free swimmers and always out in the open. Better than some grammodes or salvini cichlid that hides in the corner all the time. Never use live for any of my fish I don't get a kick out of them feeding that way and would never risk the disease feeders can bring in. But to each his own. I guess I'am neutral.

I used to watch them get eaten then after awhile I'd just put them in the tank and walk away. Now I don't have fish that eat feeders.

I raise all my own feeders (primarily convict cichlids and marbled crayfish), I don't feel bad for them though...I maintain their tanks the same way I do all my display tanks and treat them with the same respect as I do my other fishes. I love to watch my aro's, oscars and catfish go after them!

Having said that, I do feel bad for the feeder fishes at most pet stores...each getting 1 sq cm each of tank space, disease running rampant, horribly underfed, etc, etc....I don't feel bad for them being feeders, I feel bad because I respect life and think they should be treated with respect.

Case in point, when I buy crickets for my green anole and fire belly toads, I put them in an aquarium just for them, with proper heat, light, hiding areas, water and food in order to promote healthy traits in them before moving them to my terrarium. I rarely have more than 1 or 2 die out of 50 before feeding them to the lizard/toads.
