Sometimes I give them perfect loving attention and perfect everything and watch them for hours observing their odd little minds working.
Sometimes for a few days I forget they exist, depends how much I'm working
But the convicts go crazy when they are hungry.
Violent and skittish.
They can kill pretty big gold fish with those little mouths of theirs.

i think that unless your feeding massive food like whole prawns where you can precisely control the amount then you can go either under or over everyday no matter how much you try. i try to go under but then again i more than likely go over regardless of my efforts, i would rather go a little over and all my fish be well nourished than underfed as i have 2 large filters and an army of constantly hungry clown loaches for left overs. no one will be perfect unless you feed the large foods to be precise enough.

Hmmm...A little too much I guess but most of my fish are young so they do need a little more feeding in comparison to adults.

i think you are correct..very difficult but if you consiously think about it then you can make it close enough to not overdo.

well i know everyone has a different schedule and some schedules are very hectic etc...but i am here on a regular basis and look at them each and every day ...even holidays so i cannot use that feeding issue... i am just always worried about eating enough...and everyone getting their fair share... that causes some to get more then enough.

yes young fish are more active and growing and still plenty of water and space for them., they need a little extra...your babies are gorgeous.

I definitely overfed. When my silver wouldn't eat for a month I kept feeding trying to get him to eat. So when he did finally eat I fed him more he kept eating everything. So did water changes 3 times a week to clean up my mess. Now my lfs tells me I'm doing too many water changes. Haven't touched it in a week and everyone seems happy. Silver is getting big.

There is noooo such thing as too many water changes. Some people change water in breeding tanks 50% twice a day. A fish will LOVE having water changes 3x a week -- hey, this is something everyone could do instead of overfeeding -- when the fish start begging, do a water change! Seriously, the people at the LFS have one purpose and intent, which is to sell you fish and supplies. Some also know a lot about fish, but IME most don't. The evidence that favors frequent water changes is your growing and healthy fish, so keep it up!

you are soooooo sooooooo soooooo right..there is no substitute for water changes ..feeding lighter will give a better chance of maintaining water quality to the maximum but feeding lighter should not influence maintainace.. or substitute one for the other..feeding lighter just helps that food does not spoil and turn into the wiggly things, bacteria and parasites are in spoiled food..

I feed all my juvies in the 3ft alot of pellets to grow em up quicker, but on my toga tank (180g) i feed the toga once every 2-3 days, he gets some prawns occasionaly crayfish/goldy and also frogmouth pilchard. I feed the bullrouts (x3) 2 times a week, since all they eat is live food and i cant afford to get live food always, but they seem really beefy actually which is amazing, also when i get live food i get probs 100 - 150 gudgeons, and they last all but 2 days if that , since the eel like to come out at night and scoff em all down, but the bullies get alot of fish. Also have 2 filters running in the toga tank, so its all good. All tanks get waterchange 50% every 1 1/2 weeks, i also think i have a healthy balance in my tanks.

So some get alot, and some dont.
