If my fish look kinda skinny, I'll put some extra food. If they've got belly's and arent interested in the food, I'll just put a few pieces.

Yes i quess observing them is the best and only sure way.... :D

I don't know where they (whoever "they" are) came up with the idea of "whatever the fish will eat in two minutes" (or ten, or thirty, depending on what you are reading). I don't think I have enough food in my house that they couldn't, or wouldn't, eat it all in that time!!!

I feel the same way, I've never understood the whole "if they don't eat in 5 minutes" or whatever the packaging says. My fish pretty much eat the food as it hits the water, if you have a lot of food uneaten you really had to overfeed heavily

good point... never understood that either..

overfeed :/

The overfeeder! That sounds like a name for a superhero or something.

It depends on which fish for me. The Dovii I feed every other. A reasonable amount but having that time in between gives him time to digest it properly. My other cichlids are once daily .The cats are fed a large amount but only fed every third day. 1 indicator I use is their poops. I look for how well digested it is .If it doesn't look digested, break up easily and you seem to have plenty about, chances are they are getting fed too much. I think the amount they can digest is more important than the amount they can consume.
