Do you punish your fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Lol Some of the stuff ppl said are very funny and for the ppl that are complaining and have their underwear on too tight. I was asking a question bc someone said something of the nature to me and i was curious what you guys thought. And most of the ppl that responded, responded sarcasticly.

I clearly stated what I did to my oscar and if thats abuse for a 2" oscar who had 1/3 of the 55g tank to himself then i dont know how to care for fish properly i guess..

lol, my Pumkinseed Sunfish constantly bites me when I am trying to clean the tank, ect. So I just "smack him", and he stays away for awhile, but then comes back to bite me some more. He just never learns...
Also, when I had an Oscar in the 60-Gallon, I added a new fish, and he would chase them around constantly, so I caught him with a net, and kept him in it for about 15min. (Kind of like a time-out) And once I let him out of the net, he never even looked at the new fish in the tank, LOL.

Haha i'm offended

I didn't know how to take you, I didn't know if you were serious or bullshetting me, lol.

I have no desire to punish a fish. When I was younger I did, but not now. I am older and more wiser.

Don't be too hard on them or they will rebel and end up pregnant or join a gang.

Punishing your fish for being aggressive is like beating your microwave for burning your popcorn.

lol.

when my sucker tries to go after the discus, i would just knock on the tank to make he scared so he goes away to his hiding spot. I think fishes learn their lessons, they're not as stupid as people think. My catfish remembers the spot where i handfeed him fish [thats y he is always poking his little head there], he would come out when I 'ME ONLY' walk near the tank because he knows that I'M the only one in the family who feeds him. So i guess fishes do learn their lessons and REMEMBER IT. :)

I completely agree many fish, especially Cichlids, are much smarter than people give them credit for…

Many of my fish recognize me over other people and respond much differently when I approach the tank than other people.

I also tap on the glass to put my hand in the tank and move towards a fish to break up a fight or otherwise discourage behavior I don’t like.

But to think we can “punish” our fish to make it stop following it’s nature is expecting to much. Cichlid are by nature aggressive fish with certain territorial needs. They also have an instinctual need to establish a pecking order. No amount of “time outs”, flicking in the nose, etc will overcome them following their nature…

If you want your fish to not be aggressive, I suggest you keep a non aggressive species…

And while I find many of the posts in this thread amusing (drowning a fish, throwing a bird off a cliff… good ones) and totally understand most are silly exaggerations and read that way… there are a handful of people attempting to break a fish from it’s nature, which I do not think is good practice and definitely do not think is good advice.

I’m not freaking out because you do it… but I think people come to forums for good advice and I cannot help but to discourage members from promoting bad advice… Call me a fanatic if you wish, I’m just trying to make MFK more beneficial to the new hobbyist…
